Strategic Partnerships and Engagement Officer

The Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions is a groundbreaking initiative in the field of public health advocacy and science. The Center combines the expertise of highly respected gun violence researchers with the skills of deeply experienced gun violence prevention advocates. We use a public health approach to conduct rigorous scientific research to identify a range of innovative solutions to gun violence. Because gun violence disproportionately impacts communities of color, we ground our work in equity and seek insights from those most impacted on appropriate solutions. Using the best available science, our Center works towards expanding evidence-based advocacy and policy-making efforts. This combination of expertise creates a unique opportunity to turn public health research into action that reduces deaths and injuries from gun violence.


The Center for Gun Violence Solutions at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is seeking a Strategic Partnerships and Engagement Officer to strengthen key partnerships and relationships with organizations working towards similar goals nationwide. This position will report to the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Partnerships to provide and will focus on cultivating relationships, providing recommendations, and building the capacity of community-based organizations and individuals working to reduce gun violence.


This is a full-time, hybrid (2 days a week in the office) post based in Baltimore or Washington, DC.


A successful candidate will have experience working in a fast-paced environment, can work independently, and contribute to a team-based environment to advance the goals and messages of the Center for Gun Violence Solutions.


Special Duties & Responsibilities

  • Working with input from the team to complete an asset map for the Center on strategic relationships and partnerships.
  • Assists in the organization’s racial equity strategic plan, included but not limited to assessing the needs of internal staff to develop cultural competencies as appropriate.
  • Develop partnerships with key stakeholders and decision makers in the GVP space.
  • Work across center teams to identify key partnerships in priority states to increase community engagement and inform racial equity analyses.
  • Provide workshops and promote awareness regarding gun violence prevention; include creation of workshop materials, fact sheets, and other presentation materials.
  • Facilitate DEI professional development workshops and programming for CVGS faculty and staff, in line with the Centers strategic plan.
  • Develop professional relationships and partnerships with internal and external DEI and GVP.
  • Develop and collect data that identify areas of success, and areas and potential growth to identify equity-based goals, conduct surveys, focus groups, or create other effective methods to collect data and create metrics to track equity outcomes and initiatives.
  • And other functions as needed.


Additional Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Experience working with community-based organizations and building partnerships.
  • Experience working on a diverse team and working with different communication styles.
  • An understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail and demonstrate an ability to adapt to the needs of a diverse and high-paced research environment quickly and comfortably.
  • Open communication, sharing of expertise and ideas, and the ability to take direction and respond positively to feedback.
  • Good oral and written communication and reading comprehension skills, be comfortable using technology (e.g., computers, laptops, tablets, copier, printer) and with Office programs.
  • Experience implementing effective and innovative professional development programs and services for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to construct and measure programmatic learning outcomes, design programs with an inclusive and equity framework.
  • Program evaluation experience and familiarity with quantitative and qualitative methodologies for assessing programs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in a related field.
  • Three years related experience.
  • Additional relevant experience and/or training may substitute for some education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in gun violence prevention.
  • Experience with strategic partnerships.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination.
