The BRC Laboratory Technician is responsible for the processing and shipment of samples that come to the lab. The Laboratory Technician will be expected to perform the following tasks with minimal supervision: the specimen accessioning, processing, and shipping duties in a service laboratory.
Duties and Responsibilities
Collects, processes, documents, stores and ships patient specimens according to Study Protocol.
Assists with RNA and DNA extraction from banked tissue samples.
Helps organize and maintain the SAC freezer inventory.
Is responsible for the shipment of batched samples for clinical trials.
Keeps track of due dates for batch shipment of specimens.
Performs internal transfers of specimens to labs within the Cancer Center.
May attend clinical trial start up meetings.
Helps to maintain samples processed in the appropriate database and barcodes all specimens processed.
Assists with the reviews of new trials as necessary.
Assists in training new laboratory personnel for sample processing and shipment.
Helps troubleshoots samples that come to lab with missing information.
Helps to maintain equipment calibration binder and operates all equipment according to equipment procedures including safety and quality control checks.
Operates all laboratory equipment according to SOPs including cleaning and maintenance.
Has the ability to accommodate a fast paced laboratory schedule.
Other duties as assigned by the Core Director and/or Core Manager.
High School Diploma/GED with some science coursework. Good written and oral communication skills and posses general computer skill with experience with Microsoft Office.
Certificate from technical institute or internship experience.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
