General Description

The campus police officer will provide security and safety services and assist with facility maintenance and front desk support at the Columbia Campus. The CPO will also serve as the Security Officer on the SOE Incident Command during events happening on their work shift.

Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities/Abilities:

  • Activate and deactivate alarms in building during work shift.
  • Provide security services including making rounds throughout the facility and outside around the immediate perimeter of the center to deter crime and damage to property.
  • Enforce center policies and regulations
  • Escort students, faculty and staff to cars upon request
  • Generate daily security reports in log book documenting daily issues or lack thereof as well as incident reports as needed.
  • Respond to actual emergency situations
  • Conduct investigations; maintain confidentiality, write clear, concise and accurate reports
  • Conduct security inspections of campus facilities and areas, reporting conditions as necessary in order to pass fire inspections and comply with ADA requirements
  • Serve as a liaison to and coordinate with various university administrative offices in the preliminary and follow-up investigation of concerns. Report criminal offenses and disruptions to the proper authorities (police, fire, EMT, JHU Corporate Security). Examples of incidents might include: theft, vandalism, robbery, burglary, assault, medical assistance needed, distressed students, fire alarm going off, etc.
  • Provide facility support services to include assisting with room set ups and moving furniture and equipment as needed.
  • Participate and help plan emergency response to include building evacuation and shelter in place.
  • Actively participate in crime prevention and campus policing activities. Identify possible security and safety concerns and recommend/take remedial action
  • Enforce campus parking guidelines and take remedial action as needed
  • Work with COPT landlord engineers and administrators through online Service Request system and in person to maintain building and to facilitate any repairs needed.
  • Work with furniture vendors, appliance vendors, alarm company, locksmith etc. to procure services and products and to troubleshoot any issues with equipment.
  • Provide front desk support including answering telephones as needed and providing appropriate contacts – working closely with Enrollment Services, directing visitors, students, SOE staff
  • Other duties as assigned.

Special Skills & Knowledge

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
  • Ability to move heavy furniture and equipment and to work a flexible schedule when necessary.

Normal Work Schedule: Monday through Thursday: 2pm – 10:15pm, Saturdays: 7:30am – 5pm

Qualifications

High School Diploma/GED required. Two years of security and/or law enforcement experience required (equivalent college credits and pertinent life experience may be considered in lieu of formal police training). Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Must pass a university criminal background investigation, physical/health screening by JHU Office of Occupational Health and Safety which includes a drug screening and successfully meet and maintain Campus Safety and Security physical requirements.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
