General Description:

Responsible for managing high-risk drinking and other drug use prevention initiatives, including planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and services. Provide supervision to student group(s).

Primary Job Duties:

  • Collaborate with campus and community partners on research, policies, and initiatives to develop a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to AOD.
  • Mobilize key stakeholders for collective action to shift the campus culture and environment around alcohol and high-risk drinking and other drug use, including abuse of prescription drugs.
  • Conduct environmental assessments of campus community health needs and resources and utilize data to inform programs and initiatives.
  • Oversee Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) including provision of services to student population and training Graduate Assistants as providers.
  • Recruit, train, and mentor peer AOD educators and contribute to students’ professional and personal growth.
  • Provide consultation, training and resources to campus partners and students regarding AOD. 
  • Coordinate Student Affairs efforts in complying with the federal biennial review process.
  • Oversee Sober Party Monitor protocol which includes TIPs training implementation and collaboration with colleagues on event registration approval process where alcohol will be served.
  • Host on-campus events to coincide with holidays/events that are associated with an increased risk for excessive drinking.
  • Serve as liaison with Maryland Collaborative to further develop University prevention and education programs.
  • Use social marketing and innovative technology to enhance outreach and marketing efforts. 
  • Maintain active participation in local/national organizations related to college health and ATOD.

Education:

  • A Master’s degree in public health, health education, substance abuse counseling, or closely related field required.

Experience:

  • The successful candidate will have at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified for the position.
  • Experience conducting literature reviews, needs assessments, and program evaluation.
  • Work experience within a collegiate setting; preferably with high-achieving students.
  • Familiarity with BASICS and/or motivational interviewing techniques preferred.  
  • Familiarity with research and best practices in college health promotion, including those specific to alcohol and other drug use preferred.

Certifications:

  • Certified Public Health (CPH), Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES), or Substance Abuse Specialist credentialed.

Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality. 
  • Cultural competency and ability to work with a diverse population.
  • High level of organizational skills and proven record of delivering quality results in a timely manner.
  • Must be proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
