Assistant Director, Parents Programs & Giving

Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Development, Parents Programs & Giving, the Assistant Director is responsible for the identification, cultivation, engagement and solicitation of current and former parents of undergraduates in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering.


The Assistant Director also identifies and recruits leadership parents for the Hopkins Parents Council (HPC); plans and leads HPC activities including bi-annual meetings, peer solicitations and other parent volunteer activities and events; manages a high-level stewardship program; plans and manages parent cultivation events involving the Deans, and acts as a daily resource for parents. This position also collaborates with Student Affairs and its Office of Parent and Family Engagement for website development and parent communications, as well as the Office of Annual Giving in collaboration on collective parent solicits. Travel will be required in this position.


The primary areas of focus for the Assistant Director are as follows:


Annual Gift Fund Raising

  • Develop and lead annual gift strategies for current and former Homewood undergraduate parents.
  • Plan, implement and manage a primary portfolio of up to 150 parent prospects with $1,876+ annual giving capacities.
  • Responsible for up to 75 visits annually and will implement appropriate cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies in accordance with institutional standards.
  • Solicit gifts in support of Johns Hopkins including capital, scholarship, endowment, and annual fund needs.
  • Prepare proposals, solicitation letters, and other cultivation and stewardship materials for prospects and donors.
  • Manage Annual Fund program with the Office of Annual Giving. Create, manage, edit and implement annual solicitation calendar to include direct mailings, emails, crowdfunding and micro campaigns, and Phonathon.
  • Create/cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship letters along with phoning scripts for use in acquisition of annual gifts in support of Parents Fund.
  • Develop and execute annual stewardship plan to engage/retain donors of the Hopkins Parents Fund.
  • Coordinate responses to parent inquiries or concerns, as appropriate.
  • Participate in all regularly scheduled development office meetings and institutional development and training sessions.
  • Meet weekly with the Senior Associate Director of Development, Parents Programs & Giving.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of all procedures of Johns Hopkins development & Alumni Relations.


Special Events

  • Manage and implement all logistics of the Parents Leadership Circle (PLC) Family Weekend events, to include the Roundtable Fall Gathering, HPC meeting, Luncheon with the Dean and PLC Family Reception, designed to steward leadership parent donors.
  • Manage and implement all aspects and logistics of Summer Send Off program in 12+ domestic cities and assist with implementation and logistics for 5+ International programs.
  • Manage and implement all logistics of the Parents Leadership Circle (PLC) Spring Homecoming Weekend events, to include the HPC meeting and luncheon, designed to steward leadership parent donors.
  • Lead and manage all aspects and logistics of the Commencement Special Reserved seating team for the university-wide commencement ceremony.
  • Coordination of Parent Leadership Programs, including:
  • Manage and direct the Hopkins Parents Council (HPC) program; to include solicitation and recruitment of members, strategizing for colleague recruitment of members, planning and execution of HPC events, stewardship of HPC donors and collaborate with the Office of Student Affairs.
  • Provide leadership for the planning of annual Parent Orientation and Family Weekend activities, dinners and receptions with the Deans.
  • The Assistant Director will actively collaborate with colleagues throughout Johns Hopkins University to ensure forward momentum, strategic planning and implementation to result in the continued growth of parent volunteer programs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Five to seven years of fundraising experience is required, preferably in a higher education environment.
  • Proficiency in the use of web-based applications, email usage, as well as Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and function in a fast-paced environment; proven organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be a highly motivated, goal oriented, self-starter, and have excellent written, oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to work a flex schedule including nights and weekends as required.
  • Experience working with parents in a higher education environment, with an understanding of the unique expectations of this constituency.
  • Experience in personal solicitations as well as working directly with large groups of volunteers are preferred.
  • Experience in a higher education environment preferred for those who have made their mark in other fields that draw on the same core competencies.
  • Familiarity with University nomenclature, protocols and programs as well as any previous experience with development and alumni relations database systems are highly desirable.
