General Description

 

The Development Officer is to represent the Sheridan Libraries while establishing and managing effective relationships with annual and potential major gift donors. In this role, they will work with senior development staff across Johns Hopkins, faculty, administrators and volunteer leaders. As a fundraiser they will work to identify, strategize, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of prospects.  Additionally, they will be an integral member of the Sheridan Libraries Communications and Marketing team, working with the marketing and annual fund programs to promote and advance the priorities and public affairs interests of the Sheridan Libraries and University Museums.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

 

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching programs and priorities of Johns Hopkins University in order to represent the case for support of the Sheridan Libraries.
  • Manage the Friends of the Library Advisory Council serving as primary contact for the President assisting in planning meetings/events working to identify, recruit, and onboard new Council members and volunteers to support the Libraries.
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 150 prospects with a goal to continue to engage donors and solicit major gift funds to support the priorities of the Sheridan Libraries. These prospects will generally include individual donors who are capable of making gifts of up to $50,000.
  • Complete 100 or more meaningful prospect visits per year
  • Raise on average annually $500,000 or more from major gift and annual fund donors
  • Conduct and manage research requests on alumni and Friends of the Libraries and University Museums via on-line tools and with divisional research representatives.
  • Work with staff, advisory council members, and library volunteer leaders to identify new prospects through personal visits and cultivation special events.
  • Work with central divisional representatives to create and implement annual fund strategies to raise current use support from alumni and external constituencies’.
  • Assist with planning and coordination of major development events including dedications, stewardship programs and recognition events, exhibitions and fundraising strategies.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Bachelor’s degree required; three years or more of professional experience required, preferably in a university setting. Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to work with diverse constituencies; must possess excellent communication and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to multi-task and function in a fast-paced environment with proven organizational skills and attention to detail.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in a higher education environment and/or working in a museum and/or library setting preferred. Familiarity with University programs as well as ALADIN (JHU Development Database) are highly desirable.
