Business Intelligence Analyst II

The Wilmer Eye Institute's Information Technology Team works independently to implement, maintain and document information systems for the Department of Ophthalmology (e.g. Ophthalmology Imaging systems). The team also works in conjunction with the Johns Hopkins IT Department to manage systems and integrate into the broader infrastructure (e.g. Epic electronic medical record, networking, security). The team is looking to add a Business Intelligence Analyst II  who specifically focusing on aiding faculty and administration in data management.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities

  • Participates in basic design, development, implementation, maintenance, support and documentation of clinical applications that support the Wilmer Eye Institute’s core mission of patient care, research and teaching.
  • Assists in maintaining databases and application system code. Works under supervision/guidance for assigned sections of life cycle under a defined scope. Concepts used are simple and standard; with detailed specifications provided.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of physicians, nurses, and IT professionals from the Wilmer Eye Institute and Johns Hopkins IT in the deployment and optimization of enterprise clinical information systems. This will include meetings and discussions with vendors and internal teams regarding the systems to be deployed.
  • Collaborate with the IT Team Manager and physician leaders to set departmental priorities regarding the deployment, maintenance, and optimization of clinical information systems.
  • Collaborate with the JH Core for Clinical Data Acquisition.


Data Management

  • Work with faculty and administration on basic data extraction. Develop subject matter aware data analysis.
  • Provide data from internal (Wilmer) and external (Epic) sources to quality improvement team, administration (operative note and discharge disposition data).
  • Build database queries for data extraction from departmental, system and external sources.
  • Assist in analysis of data extractions.
  • Will need either experience or training in Epic database management (e.g. Clarity, Kaboodle).


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline. 
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience, including two years involved in collecting and analyzing data, preparing reports, identifying and solving problems.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional experience may substitute for education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*


* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of project information and information management. 
  • Analytical ability required to gather data and perform transformation and analysis. 
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology and clinical informatics.


Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

  • SQL experience.

Starting Salary Range: $51,210 - $70,480 annually (commensurate with experience)

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
