Database Specialist

The Database Specialist will play a role in the construction and management of an Integrated Data System. Applicants should be comfortable programming/scripting, writing documentation, and fulfilling data requests from researchers. This person should be an inquisitive self-starter with the ability to learn new technologies in a reasonable amount of time.

 

Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the design, maintenance, and monitoring of a comprehensive participant tracking database and other smaller databases as required.
  • Participate in the design of surveys used for participant interviewing.  Monitor the functionality of interviewing computers.
  • Hire, train, and supervise students to perform quality assurance of survey data. Review quality assurance reports and document necessary data corrections.
  • Assist with preparing survey data for analyses including cross checking data with other databases, making data corrections, making construct variables, and combining several datasets. Document data collection concerns and provide assistance to researchers as needed. Maintain monthly reports showing enrollment figures, follow-up numbers, and datasets that are available for distribution.
  • Distribute data to internal and external analysts documenting each distribution in a database. Maintain cloud storage for sharing data and other files.
  • Oversee new computer set up and submit help desk tickets for existing computers as needed; submit help tickets to add users and grant permissions to file server.
  • Assist investigators with data analysis and data reporting.

 

Special Skills & Knowledge:

  • Fluency in MS Access required.
  • Fluency in SPSS or Stata for data management and basic statistical analyses required.
  • Highly motivated with ability to develop, conduct and manage multi-component research projects.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Highly productive and can work under pressure and within time constraints.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with diverse cultures.
  • Knowledge of QDS, Qualtrics or REDCap is a plus.
  • One or more scripting languages such as VBScript or JavaScript is a plus.

 

Qualifications

High School Diploma/GED required and two years related experience required. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

 

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

  • The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
