Specific Responsibilities

With a strong background in graphic design, the design specialist will create and manage a variety of marketing efforts including WordPress websites, digital marketing materials, direct mail materials, social media graphic assets and other marketing materials as needed. Create and format design work utilizing current design trends included but not limited to: disjointed text, glitch, color channel, sliced text, integration, and font as illustration.


The Design Specialist in the Office of Annual Giving reports to the Director of Marketing for the central Office of Annual Giving (OAG) at Johns Hopkins. In partnership with Assistant Director of Divisional Programs and Graphic Design, the Design Specialist serves as a strategic partner, and service provider in a decentralized university and development environment. The Office of Annual Giving is comprised of twelve employees and provides annual giving services to the nine divisions of the university, multiple departments of Johns Hopkins Medicine, and several centers and institutes, totaling 35 development units in all. These annual giving services comprise providing strategy and execution planning around securing current use, expendable funds as well as building and retaining a long term pipeline of support for each of these units.

In addition to creating design elements for all annual giving solicitations, the designer will work in conjunction with development units and OAG to create design elements for key pan-institutional giving days, as well as create enhanced graphics for acknowledgement and stewardship materials.




Bachelor’s degree in fine arts, graphic design, or related field required. Some related experience and a portfolio required.



Preferred Qualifications

  • At least three years of full-time experience in graphic design strongly preferred.
  • Comfortable working in a complex, multi-divisional, results-oriented environment.
  • Ability to establish priorities, set objectives, and achieve goals.
  • Strong visual design portfolio that is innovative, reflects current design trends and showcases a broad range of clients/challenges/solutions.
  • Advanced skills in Adobe Creative Suite and WordPress. Knowledge of digital file formats (tif, gif, eps, pdf, jpg) and a comprehensive knowledge of graphic design principles and production methods.
  • Ability to think out of the box and find creative, unorthodox solutions when needed.
  • Design and develop collateral materials, logos, program and event materials, direct mail, invitations, business cards, publications, e-mail marketing, ads, reports, folders, and fundraising activations.
  • A discerning eye for branding aesthetics and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Thrive in high-energy environments that often have short deadlines and shifting priorities.
  • Have the ability to work independently as well as on a team.
