Summary:

 

Under the leadership of the Executive Director of Career Services, the career center is central in shifting the institution towards a model of career preparedness in which all Johns Hopkins students integrate their career preparation into their academic experience with the same pursuit of excellence – distinguishing themselves as the “talent of choice”.

 

The mission of the career center at Johns Hopkins University is to cultivate lifelong career development success for Johns Hopkins students and alumni through education and access to opportunities and experiences that leverage a powerful network of alumni, employers, faculty, parents, and the greater Baltimore community.

 

Overview:

 

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Career Center, the Director of Employer Relations will set a strategic direction for employer and external relations that will modernize current practices/programs and innovate new ones. The Director of Employer Relations directs all employer engagement activities on campus including on campus recruitment, career fairs, job and internship postings, targeted industry events, etc. This position will lead a team of 5-6 professional staff who develop and expand new recruiting relationships resulting in increased internships, full-time jobs, networking connections, and career education opportunities for all undergraduate and graduate students in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering. In collaboration with the Executive Director of the Career Center, the Director of Employer Relations sets the overall employer and alumni engagement strategy for the office.  The individual in this role will be a dynamic leader and innovative project manager who will promote excellence, professionalism, and results/goal-orientation within the team. The ideal candidate is able to establish credibility, influence outcomes and work collaboratively with a wide range of internal and external constituents.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Leads the design, development, and implementation of an employer development model as conceptualized in the Career Center Strategic Plan.
  • Leads and manages all employer and alumni career engagement activities, including the cultivation of new recruiting relationships in targeted industries and locations for all students—ultimately increasing the volume, quality, and variety of employer relationships for Johns Hopkins.
  • Identifies gaps in student interests and career opportunities available, and implements a targeted engagement plan for underrepresented industry areas—capitalizing on the alumni network as a source of career education and job/internship opportunities. 
  • Serves as a “point expert” on industry and employment trends.
  • Collaborates with the Director, Student Career Development to ensure core career readiness competencies align with constantly shifting job market trends and employer partner expectations for “career readiness”.
  • Develops and manages relationships with key institutional partners (i.e. Alumni Relations, Development, Faculty/Staff leadership, Parents Programs) to foster collaboration towards shared goals/objectives.
  • Evaluates Employer and Alumni data – identifies tools/ technology that will enhance efficiency, productivity and effectiveness of their engagement with students.
  • Develops strategic marketing and communications plans/objectives and coordinates these plans with the center’s Communication Specialist in order to increase employer engagements
  • Monitors their academy budgets and reporting.
  • Analyzes career outcomes information (First Destination Survey data) and uses it to create an employer engagement strategy based on JHU student interest
  • Maximizes Employer Relations team morale, performance, and collaboration (internally and externally); provides strategic and tactical advice, guidance and coaching, performance reviews, and professional development support for 5-6 professionals.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Education:

 

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s Degree - MBA, Higher Education, or related field – preferred.

 

Experience Required:

 

  • Five years related experience required. Knowledge of and experience (8+) in combination of:  business development, sales, marketing, and/or University Career Services- employer relations, college recruiting or alumni relations preferred.
  • Experience and solid track record in managing and leading a team of people.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data and trends and create actionable solutions and strategies
  • Experience in word processing, database, spreadsheet and presentation software.
  • Relationship management skills

Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
