Distance Education Librarian

 

General Summary/Purpose:

Distance education librarian with expertise in online higher education and library services support that will cultivate and maintain good working relationships with program directors, faculty, students and staff. Librarian will work both in teams and autonomously to develop and provide excellent customer service to faculty, staff and students. This position requires liaison work and outreach to specific departments and programs as well as acting as an internal expert and source for information on information literacy concepts. Maintain records and statistics as required by the library to support contractual goals for service and quality delivery as assessed by performance metrics. Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion about project details and contractual agreements.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Liaison

Provide academic department specific library liaison support including:

  • Collaborate with and serve the research and teaching needs of the faculty in a specific area of discipline; maintain and foster strong working relationships with current and new faculty.
  • Stay abreast of scholarship in the programs and discipline(s) served and use this knowledge to anticipate and respond to departmental needs.  Provide subject- related reference and instructional services to assigned disciplines and academic departments.
  • Participate in course development through consultations/collaborations.

 

Provide library and information science domain expertise specifically for information literacy instruction within the library team, including:

  • Facilitate information literacy as the ability to identify information needs, seek out resources to meet those needs, analyze, synthesize, evaluate, and communicate the resulting knowledge.
  • Generate ideas to continue integration of information literacy skills in additional courses, programs, etc.
  • Stay abreast of trends and issues associated with information literacy standards and guidelines to anticipate and respond to emerging service and support needs.
  • Maintain expertise in copyright as it relates to topics in information literacy instruction.
  • Understand and stay abreast of trends in ADA requirements.

 

Reference

  • Provide access to information and ideas by directing students to current resources that support the curriculum; promote and encourage the ethical use of information by students and faculty.
  • Share subject expertise with other liaisons, including instruction.  
  • Design, implement and maintain web based tools and services (tutorials, research guides, etc.) that meet the needs of all populations:
    • Evaluate the impact and effectiveness of library resources and services in meeting instructional objectives.
    • Communicate with online students and faculty for online library orientation and research needs.

 

Collection Development

  • Curate resources in all formats through evaluation and assessment.
  • Select and manage materials for the library’s collection in coordination with other staff librarians adhering to stipulated budget.
  • Develop effective plans and processes to provide library resources that support the college/university mission and program objectives.

 

Instruction

  • Provide instruction activities to students, faculty and staff in both course-related instruction and subject-specific research workshops; provide orientations to the library to all populations.
  • Integrate library resources and services into course management systems
  • Contribute to innovative online communication tools to help enable users’ work:
    • Provide support for services and products that promote distance education in cooperation with other library and university personnel involved in distance education.
    • Represent the ELP and/or the library at campus, project and outside committees and meetings as assigned.
    • Build awareness of library services and resources to users; visit client in person and promote library usage: some travel required.
    • Serve on appropriate committees to provide ideas and resources to internal and external customers/clients: assist in the initiation of new services, programs or projects.

 

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Master's of Library Science or Master’s in Library and information Science degree from an American Library Association accredited program required and a minimum of three years professional experience in instruction and implementing information literacy skills throughout the curriculum. 
  • Requires excellent reference, interpersonal and communication skills to support online students.
  • Educational background, knowledge, or experience in undergraduate and graduate curriculum areas that include one or more of the following:
    • Business, information technology, humanities, human/public services; ability to develop and maintain, via the Web, instruction and orientation programs for students in the use of a virtual/online library's resources and services.
  •  ability to deliver reference services in a distributed environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of library information systems, learning management systems and services; in-depth knowledge of online resources.
  • Understanding of and experience in collection development; demonstrated profound commitment to customer service.
  • Strong technology skills including experience with innovative applications of instructional and communication technologies, wikis, blogs, web conferencing, screen capture software, and discovery tools.
  • Needed to provide innovative library services, student support for electronic databases and other electronic Web-based library resources.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively.
  • Willingness to work flexible schedule.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with American Library Association standards and national/regional accreditation standards; along with knowledge and understanding of ACRL Information Literacy Framework for Higher Education. Experience with planning developing and implementing a comprehensive information literacy program.
  • Knowledge of tools and applications for the creation of instructional resources is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge and understanding of copyright issues and trends.
  • Knowledge and understanding of ADA compliance.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
