Executive Director - Strategic Communications

Purpose of Position:

The Executive Director of Communications, reporting to the Associate Dean for Global Marketing and Communications, will lead the strategy and execution of Communications at the Carey Business School, including Social Media, Internal Communications, External Communications, Media Relations, Public Affairs, and Crisis Management.  The successful candidate will fully develop and articulate the story of the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School to various global constituents and manage the School’s messaging to both external and internal stakeholders.


Extensive education and/or experience will receive additional consideration for compensation outside of the posted range.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop new brand strategy story by constituent (Development, Alums, Current Students, Prospective Students, Faculty, etc.)
  • Develop and execute against an external communications plan - story telling via printed materials, panels, speaking, public appearances, media (e.g., NPR), etc.
  • Lead annual messaging strategy and execution for Carey for Dean and Management Council across all key constituents
  • Lead team in creation of strategic, impactful, motivating and memorable Dean’s speeches and remarks
  • Lead Brand Sponsorships strategy and execution
  • Lead Talent Relations for Dean including opportunities for the Dean to network and build business
  • Lead Social Media strategy and execution, including Dean's Account for Social Media
  • Lead and develop Communications team
  • Oversee Communications team in day-to-day Communications function including Carey Narrative and Core Messages, Internal Communications, External Communications, Media Relations, School Publications, Public Affairs, Crisis Management and functionally - writing, editing, messaging
  • Lead key school-wide initiatives driven by the Dean's office Lead sourcing diverse speakers that align with the goals of the school
  • Conceptualize, write, and edit key communications


 Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification:

  • Master’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Business or a related field required.
  • 8 years’ experience of related experience required, 10 years of relevant experience preferred.


Knowledge and Skill:

  • Exceptional story telling ability to a large variety of constituents
  • Excellent writer and evaluator of great writing
  • Strong executive presence and ability to represent Carey on the Dean's behalf
  • Strong organizational skills with strict adherence to timelines/ workflow / project management
  • Excellent media contacts and relations
  • Ability to lead with broad vision but also clearly articulate (written and verbal) strategies and plans to achieve goals
  • Strong leadership skills across all levels of the organization

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
