Financial Analyst

General Summary:

The Financial Analyst reports to the Homewood Student Affairs Assistant Finance Director and is responsible for assisting the Assistant Finance Director with daily financial operations, development of annual operating, salary, and capital budgets, fiscal year-end closing and presentation material for meetings with senior leadership.  The position also monitors all gift and endowment funding, ensuring proper use of funds.  Assists Assistant Finance Director with annual setup and periodic reporting of Title IV grant from the Department of Education.  Serves as divisional expert on BW/Analysis, Purchasing and Travel modules of SAP.  May serve as backup for HR Coordinator for document approval, time entry, and student employment and ISR/ZSR/eForms as needed.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Extract, analyze and verify data from SAP BW, and develop moderately complex weekly, monthly and quarterly reports for review by the Assistant Finance Director including forecasting, trending and results analysis, identifying discrepancies from approved budgets resulting from potential posting errors, program changes and/or new department initiatives.
  • Monitors, identifies and communicates important budgetary issues such as over expenditures, revenue reductions, potential cost savings and unplanned expenses as well as status of current and pending issues to the Assistant Finance Director.
  • Use various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate, and format data and/or reports.
  • Assist in periodic reporting of University-wide Title IV grant activity to participating divisions including assisting in preparation of consolidated annual financial report to the Department of Education.
  • Ensures compliance with departmental policies and the policies of the University in regards to proper use of funds.
  • Review, correct and process revenue and expenditure transactions, including journal transfers, non payroll cost transfers; review and approve transactions as Business Office representative for other departments.
  • Monitor and reconcile divisional accounts (including capital and balance sheets accounts) using BW/Analysis reporting and SAP transaction system, manage Business Office and Student Accounts operating accounts.
  • Reconciles receipts, pledge and gift levels of Homewood gifts and endowments, ensuring proper use of funds, processing endowment requests for the Treasurer’s Office, and requesting master data as needed.
  • Assists Assistant Finance Director with creation of annual budget worksheets and other Excel documents needed to complete the annual budget preparation (annual budget of approximately $180M).
  • Communicate routinely with JHU Finance, HR Shared Services, H.S.A. administrators, supervisors and managers on fiscal, budget or other matters.
  • Resolve payment and purchasing issues with external vendors and suppliers.
  • Maintain electronic and paper documentation on departmental operating budgets (over 50 unique) as well as divisional expense, gift and endowment accounts, and sponsored accounts.
  • Perform administrative duties to support Executive Director and/or Assistant Finance Director as needed:                         
  • Provide superior customer service to students H.S.A. staff and other members of the Hopkins community.
  • Attend monthly Homewood Student Affairs Administrator meetings.  Serve as liaison between Administrator group and Divisional Business Office.  May co-chair H.S.A. Department Administrators committee.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree required.Will substitute experience for education.

 

Experience:

Three years progressively responsible related financial/accounting experience required. At least five years’ directly related experience in finance or accounting required with additional experience in HR policies preferred.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills or Abilities:

Must have the ability to make independent judgment, work for long periods of time without direction, prioritize own work, work with flexibility on several tasks simultaneously and to meet concurrent deadlines.Must possess demonstrate strong organizational skills, analytical and problem solving abilities and attention to detail.

 

The Financial Analyst must be able to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, with individuals of varying levels within the organization.  Must possess strong computer skills (PowerPoint, Word) and be an advanced Excel user.  SAP/BW experience strongly preferred.

Starting Salary Range ($s): $55,000 - $65,000

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
