Instructional Design and Development Supervisor

General Summary/Purpose:

The Instructional Design and Development Supervisor will provide instructional design/technology to support the expansion and operation of our online and onsite (classroom) programs. This position will provide instructional design, development, and evaluation services to faculty with technology-enhanced instruction that will promote learning technologies for both onsite and online courses. The candidate will assess instructional design and development learning opportunities/needs and provide individual training and coaching for faculty to meet those needs. The candidate will contribute to faculty development workshops and support residencies that promote teaching, learning, and assessment in areas related to learning strategies, instructional technology, and student learning outcomes. The Instructional Design and Development Supervisor is an integral member of the Teaching & Learning@Carey (T&L) team and collaborates with T&L leadership in implementing Carey’s online course policies and operating practices to ensure the success of Carey’s programs.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

A. Online Course Coordination

  • Lead the continued improvement and maintenance of the online programs through course design, course and program evaluations, and course revisions.
  • Support the offering of ADA, Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 compliant content for online programs (i.e., ensure all videos, content, and graphics are properly developed with ADA and Section 508 guidelines).
  • Support the online development vendor operations with Carey departments and faculty.
  • Implement a quality assurance processes to ensure that the online courses are functional and error free.
  • Coordinate access and deployment activities with various Carey departments to ensure that the program is properly set up in Blackboard, Student Information System, and other related systems.
  • Collaborate with T&L’s Multimedia Technology team on media implementation, synchronous online sessions, program residencies, faculty filming, and other events.
  • Lead the maintenance and continuous improvement of an orientation program for newly enrolled online students.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data on the program progress, challenges, and areas for improvement.
  • Collaborates with team members and faculty to develop technology enriched course materials using new and emerging instructional technologies, digital media, web-based technologies, etc.
  • Provides technical support for online course delivery in both synchronous and asynchronous learning environments.

 

B. Staff Performance Management

  • Supervise supporting full time Instructional Designers to achieve T&L goals
  • Train, coach and mentor supporting Instructional Designers to achieve established performance goals and objectives.
  • Schedule staff to ensure faculty support for the School’s instructional design and technology needs.

 

C. Faculty Training and Development

  • Support the instructional design/development and technology processes of the Carey online and onsite programs that will promote learning technologies.
  • Support and implement solutions for instructional design and development processes (i.e., determine faculty learning opportunities and needs, software evaluation and recommendations).
  • Contribute to faculty development workshops that will promote teaching, learning, and assessment in areas related to learning strategies, instructional technology, and student learning outcomes.
  • Conduct individual training and coaching for faculty to meet instructional design and development learning opportunities and needs.
  • Designs, develops and delivers training workshops to introduce faculty, Teaching Assistants, and students to the emerging instructional technologies and their effective application in teaching and learning.
  • Develop asynchronous blackboard training for program for new faculty and Teaching Assistants.

 

D. Instructional Design and Development

  • Lead the writing, copy editing, and scripting for online courses, and related initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the online course development vendor in the design, development, and delivery of online courses.
  • Provide instructional design, development and evaluation services for already developed Carey online courses and programs in collaboration with faculty.
  • Provide instructional design, development and evaluation services for onsite courses in collaboration with faculty.

 

E. Instructional Technology

  • Consults with faculty, Instructional Teaching Specialists (ITS), Teaching Assistants, and staff on a variety of instructional technologies such as, Blackboard, TurnItIn, Adobe Connect, Voicethread, Zoom, Poll Everywhere, and Web Content Management Systems (WordPress, Blogger, Expression Engine).
  • Serves as a resource to the Senior Instructional Technology Consultant in strategies for effectively integrating instructional technologies in traditional face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses.
  • Serves as a resource to the Senior Instructional Technology Consultant in offering technology support during the new faculty and staff onboarding process.
  • Collaborates with team members to test new building blocks in Blackboard.
  • Works with other Hopkins schools and Central IT in solving technological issues as related to Blackboard and other shared learning resources using JIRA ticketing system.
  • Lead the testing new features and piloting new solutions in conjunction with other JHU schools.
  • Assumes an admin/leadership role on eLearning tools as assigned.
  • Assists in evaluation and pilots of new and emerging instructional technologies based on sound pedagogy and specific instructional needs.
  • Researches and disseminate educational technology resources and best practices in technology enhanced teaching and learning.

 

F. Other Tasks as Assigned

  • Note: This position requires occasional evenings and weekends in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. (Dupont Circle) to accommodate program needs.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Graduate degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or related field.
  • Three years of professional level experience in course design and development, faculty training, or program/course assessment/evaluation required.
  • Significant additional related experience may substitute for advanced degree.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Four or more years of progressively responsible experience coordinating higher education (and/or corporate) technology-based projects and programs.
  • 1-2 years of supervisory and management experience, or experience functioning as a team lead strongly preferred.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in the practical application of instructional design theory.
  • Skilled in all instructional design processes: needs assessments, design, development, teaching, implementation, and evaluation/assessment, including developing rubrics.
  • Expertise in web conferencing tools (e.g., Adobe Connect, Zoom) and learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard).
  • Knowledge of social media tools and their application in teaching, learning, and research.
  • Skilled in content editing and scripting for video production.
  • Knowledge of multimedia authoring software and project management tools.
  • Knowledge of lecture and screen capture tools such as Camtasia, Adobe Presenter, Adobe Captivate, Panopto etc.
  • Ability to research new technology tools beneficial to promoting engaged learning and teaching.
  • Ability to collect data, analyze data, create reports, and prepare written communication with an attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a varied constituency including faculty, staff, students, and industry representatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and highly organized.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of MS Office Suite software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for corresponding, analysis, information storage, and presentation.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience developing courses in a course management systems (e.g., Blackboard),and utilizing web design tools (e.g., Photoshop, DreamWeaver, HTML, CSS), digital video, audio editing software, and multimedia authoring software (e.g., Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and/or Final Cut Pro).
  • Experience developing asynchronous training sites & materials.

 

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

  • Quality Matters (QM) or Online Learning Consortium (OLC) certification is preferred.

 

Supervisory Responsibility (indicate the number and type of persons supervised by incumbent):

  • 3-4 Instructional Designers

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
