Instructional Technologist

 

Purpose of Position:

The Instructional Technologist is responsible for the administrative and technical aspects of the delivery of AAP's online, blended, and web-supported courses. The Instructional Technologist works collaboratively with the Instructional Resource Center (IRC) team to support and maintain the delivery 0f AAP courses. 

 

Knowledge and Skill:

  • Must be detail-oriented, have a solid technical aptitude, a strong service orientation, and a team focus.
  • Must have experience with Blackboard or similar course management system and be able to learn to facilitate the delivery of online courses according to standard Bb best practices.
  • Experience integrating third-party tools into Blackboard via LTI.
  • Knowledge (awareness/appreciation) of current and emerging instructional technologies and demonstrated experience in integrating these in online instruction using best practices.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use HTML editors, HTML/web scripting languages (XML, javascript, CSS, asp, PHP, etc.), lecture capture software, test authoring software, online conferencing applications, PDF authoring tools, video authoring software, and graphic design (Adobe Creative Suite) tools.  
  • Knowledge of instructional design theories and strategies.
  • Should have mid-level development skills and be able to update custom-built database solutions for the IRC operational database.
  • Ability to apply principles of design to provide online education to persons with disabilities and knowledge of Universal Design principles, accessibility (ADA/508/UDL) standards, and SCORM.
  • Must have understanding and experience with videography, podcasting, servers, databases, streaming audio and video, social media, and multimedia. 
  • Requires strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation to work well with faculty, staff, and vendors. 
  • Requires excellent time management skills, organizational skills, ability to prioritize tasks, and the ability to deal with multiple constituencies concurrently in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. 

 

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in working with streaming audio and video, compression methods, file types and formats, and related software and platforms (i.e., Panopto, Camtasia Studio, Kaltura, etc.).

 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • B.A. /B.S. degree in education, instructional design, educational technology, or other related disciplines.
  • Two years of progressively responsible experience in course design and development, faculty training, or program/course assessment/evaluation required.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience, and additional experience may substitute required education to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5- years of professional experience in an academic or corporate environment, designing and developing distance or online instruction.
  • Thorough knowledge of online instructional design, pedagogy/andragogy, emerging technology, and distance learning best practices desirable. 
  • Demonstrated use of Quality Matters™ rubric or similar course design quality standards.
  • Experience working with both Mac and PC platforms.
  • Knowledge of best practices for the effective implementation of instructional technology tools in higher education.
  • Familiarity with best practices in the use and development of video in higher education distance learning, including digital video editing tools.
  • Minimum 2-years of experience using course authoring tools like Adobe Captive or Articulate Storyline.
  • Minimum 2-years of experience developing interactive training materials and learning objects.

 

Internal and External Contacts: 

  • Collaborate with JHU Instructional Design group to share best practices throughout the Hopkins community.
  • Communicate with IT@JHU to document issues with our CMS and other instructional technologies.
  • Collaborate with the Center for Educational Resources (CER) on various training and instructional design projects.
  • Collaborate with Library Services on student orientation, copyright, reserves and student support systems.
  • Attend CMS Support meetings to exchange issues and best practices on current JHU online learning and technology processes.
  • Work with assigned external vendors as necessary to maintain functionality of current systems:
    • Embanet – 24/7 faculty and student help desk,
    • Blackboard – JHU Course Management System ,
    • VoiceThread – Enterprise level presentation web application for online learning
  • Work with professional certification groups as necessary to maintain institutional certification:
    • Quality Matters (QM)
    • Sloan C
    • Blackboard

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Blackboard:

  • Evaluates, recommends and implements new instructional technologies
  • Maintains, documents, and supports the AAP Blackboard environment 
  • Designs and maintains web applications and Blackboard course site templates using a variety of platforms and tools, including but not limited to HTML, XML, ASP, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Assists in effective implementation of instructional technology tools and integration of third-party tools into Blackboard via LTI
  • Participates in integration planning and testing of Bb system upgrades and building block installations; tests and implements Bb updates to ensure functional alignment, performance, and stability 

 

Web:

  • Develops and manages the IRC website

 

Instructional Tech Support:

  • Research, pilot, and implement instructional technologies, emerging technologies, and instructional design theories within AAP courses.
  • Uses a variety of tools to inform faculty and student about the status, use, and availability of instructional technologies.
  • Assist with developing, maintaining, and updating training materials and resources in various delivery modalities.
  • Consults with and advocates the use of pedagogical strategies and instructional technologies to faculty and staff.
  • Assist with developing online learning content within the LMS and/or using other course authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, etc.)
  • Utilize multimedia technology and authoring tools to develop interactive and engaging instructional resources.
  • Apply best practices and knowledge of instructional design and adult learning theory to the strategy, design, and delivery of online programs.
  • Maintain IRC custom-built database solutions.
  • Provide technical support to AAP clients in collaboration with JHU-AAP help desk staff.

 

Accessibility:

  • Assist IRC with ensuring compliance through the adoption of accessibility (ADA/508/UDL) standards as well as university/division standards.

 

Projects:

  • Serve as a member of a course development team, which may include subject-matter experts, program directors, instructional designers, multimedia specialists, etc.
  • Manage project timelines and coordinate with IRC staff and partners to meet project deliverables.
  • Serve as the liaison between JHU IT and IRC for CMS meetings.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
