Laboratory Technician

General Summary/Purpose


Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, the laboratory technician performs a variety of both routine and complex research laboratory procedures in accordance with established standards and protocols. This individual will be expected to acquire a level of knowledge to properly analyze results, especially where results are abnormal or atypical. Specific duties may vary according to project assigned.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Performs a variety of research laboratory techniques with primary focus on cell biology related to the study of lung diseases. Our lab focuses on mechanisms of endothelial cell dysfunction in lung diseases. The candidate will be expected to perform cell culture to maintain and expand cell lines for experiments. Techniques to be performed include, but are not limited to: cell culture (including primary cells and/or stem cells), cell isolation, fluorescence / confocal microscopy and gel electrophoresis. The candidate will prepare and determine suitability of solutions and reagents following defined formulas and procedures.


They will also document and report all experimental results at lab meeting. They will complete required logs and supporting documents, and help with maintenance of troubleshooting of equipment, including the epifluorescence microscope. Occasionally, they will also perform related general duties such as ordering supplies, general lab housekeeping, and maintaining safety records.


Minimum Qualifications


High School Diploma/GED with some science coursework.


Preferred Qualifications


Training Certificate from Technical Institute internship experience preferred.

Associate Degree or higher preferred

Understanding/interest in imaging technologies and analysis of imaging data


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


This work requires precision and attention to detail. Individual should have strong communication and interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to read and interpret direction, both oral and written, organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments. Must be able to work successfully as part of a team in a dynamic laboratory.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
