Ophthalmic Ultrasound Technician Assist

This position reports to the Retina Chief or designee and will consist of on the job instruction to become proficient in all phases of diagnostic ultrasound including biometry for axial length measurements, IOL Master for axial length measurements, contact B-scan and standardized A-scan examinations. Interactions include, but are not limited to, patients of all ages, Hopkins physicians, external physicians, ophthalmic technicians, clinical trial coordinators, patient service coordinators, clinical trial sponsors.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform patient examinations: A-scan biometry and IOL Master prior to cataract surgery, contact B-scan and standardized A-scan for evaluation of intraocular and orbital pathology.
  • Type accurate reports in EPR.
  • Prepare reports for referring physician and/or give preliminary verbal reports to referring physicians.
  • Preserve and edit images in the Oculab System.
  • Sponsored and unsponsored clinical trials: assist with data collection such as image cataloging and archiving.
  • Prepare, ship, and receive image materials.
  • Assist with material for publication.
  • Assist with administrative tasks required to process patients referred for ultrasound.
  • Register patients, log demographic information, prepare charts, type, process and send reports.
  • Recognize proper insurance authorizations and pay meticulous attention to proper CPT and ICD-9 coding rules and regulations.
  • Answer telephones, make patient appointments.
  • Process and send reports: hand-delivered, faxed, EPR and/or through the US postal service.
  • Order supplies.
  • Maintain equipment.
  • Utilize the SAP accounting system to order supplies and equipment, and travel reimbursement.
  • Assist with preparation of budgets for the clinic and research projects.

 

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • One year of clinical medical experience required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Medical technical school certificate or some college or a college education preferred.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with patients of all ages in a clinical setting helpful.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology helpful.
  • Knowledge of eye anatomy and physiology helpful.
  • Knowledge of eye disease and systemic diseases that affect the eye helpful.
  • Ability to work effectively in areas where there is a large amount of patient and staff traffic and related interruptions.
  • Able to assess and quickly respond to complex and rapidly changing situations.
  • Must function well under pressure while maintaining a pleasant disposition towards patients and co-workers.
  • Ability to assist with patients in wheelchairs and stretchers and assist with ambulation.
  • Excellent manual dexterity while working with equipment and eyes.

 

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

  • R.O.U.B. certification required within 18 months of hire. Must maintain certification throughout duration of employment.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
