Piano Technician

General Summary/Purpose:

 

Reporting to the supervisor of Concert Operations, and functioning as a member of the Piano Maintenance team the duties of the Piano Technician include:    

Concert level tuning, voicing, repair and action regulation, moving, cleaning and restringing of the pianos used for teaching, practice and performances for the Peabody Conservatory of Music.   

This is a full time 12 month position with the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University supporting both the Conservatory and the Preparatory of Music.  As such the incumbent must be available to work evenings and weekends when required by the concert schedule.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Concert quality tuning, voicing, repair, action regulation, piano moving, cleaning, repair and restringing of pianos used for teaching, practice and performance.  
  • Participates in moving pianos, or supervising piano movers, when needed.
  • Prepares pianos for rehearsals and performances meeting artist’s standards. 
  • Maintain contact with piano industry experts and remain abreast of market development and advances in latest technology practices.  
  • Works with the members of the piano maintenance team to prioritize the needs of the department as well as the inventory and its use.
  • As a member of the piano maintenance team is responsible for the proper maintenance and care of all piano inventory 
  • May assist in teaching and supervising student employees
  • ­­­­­­­­­­­­­Performs other relevant duties as assigned.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Required:   

  • HS/GED required:  bachelors’ degree strongly preferred. 
  • Must be able to tune aurally with accuracy and stability.
  • Expertise in concert level tuning.
  • 3-5 years of experience to  include concert level tuning,  knowledge of grand and upright piano repair and maintenance; installation of action parts; action regulation;  and voicing for professional musician standards
  • Must be able to work some evenings and weekends according to the concert schedule; this will include working during the summer.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to support working with students, faculty, dealers, donors and guest performers as necessary to perform the job.
  • Ability to participate in moving pianos with the assistance of equipment

 

Preferred:

  • RPT certification from the PTG- Piano Technician’s Guild

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
