Research Data Analyst

The Department of Ophthalmology is seeking a Research Data Analyst  to oversee data storage (OCT, OCT angiography, fundus photographs etc) and to create and implement data processing pipelines. This position will work in close collaboration with faculty and staff across different departments and institutions to develop and implement efficient ways to organize, store and analyze data with attention to security and confidentiality. 


One goal is to ensure that the data is stored in an organized fashion and processing scripts and code are organized and stored using conventional version control systems (e.g., Git).  The ideal candidate will be very organized and have a strong understanding of databases and data analysis procedures along with at least basic programming skills using Matlab and Python. The candidate should also be “tech-savvy” and possess excellent communication, teamwork and troubleshooting skills.


This position will also support testing and development of novel image analysis and image rendering methods for an interdisciplinary research group utilizing novel pilot data from experimental imaging systems.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Create and enforce policies for effective data storage and management
  • Help develop and implement quality control methods and algorithms for multiple types of images and data
  • Devise and implement efficient and secure procedures for data handling and analysis with attention to all technical aspects
  • Support others in the daily use of data systems and ensure adherence to legal standards
  • Assist with reports, data extraction and data analysis when needed
  • Monitor and analyze information and data systems and evaluate their performance to discover ways of enhancing them (new technologies, upgrades etc.)
  • Create programming pipelines for processing incoming data as requested by the PI or colleagues
  • Troubleshoot data-related problems and authorize maintenance or modifications


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related discipline
  • 3 years related experience
  • Additional education (Master's level) may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula*
  • Proven experience as data manager


JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.   For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent understanding of data administration and management functions (collection, analysis, distribution etc.)
  • Familiarity with Matlab, Python, Git
  • Familiarity with basic image processing
  • Familiarity with image file formats
  • Proficient in Windows and Linux systems
  • An analytical mindset with problem-solving skills

Starting Salary Range: $45,650 - $62,850 annually (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
