General summary/purpose:

The Research Program Assistant II will be responsible for screening, recruitment, data collection, and data entry for ongoing research projects.

 

Specific duties & responsibilities:

Data collection responsibilities include:  abstracting data from paper and electronic medical records, conducting baseline and follow-up interviews over the phone or in person. These could be inpatients admitted to the Johns Hopkins Hospital or Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. In addition, recruitment responsibilities will also include interactions with outpatients.

Organize and file participant records. Assist in study chart reviews, preparation and maintenance of study materials. Perform other recruitment, retention and research related activities as needed.

Data management responsibilities include: inputting, organizing, editing, and verifying accuracy of data prior to entry into a database.

Conduct literature searches as requested.

Understand the importance/impact of data integrity regarding honest reporting of sensitive and confidential patient information.

Adhere to guidelines regarding the sensitivity and confidential nature of patient information.

Exercise good judgment, tact, and sensitivity at all times.

Participate in weekly staff meetings to report on screening, recruitment and data collection progress and resolve problems. 

Work independently and under the direction of the study coordinator to ensure successful completion of the clinical research study.

Learn and follow all study procedures and protocols.

 

This description is a general statement of required major duties and responsibilities performed on a regular and continuous basis. It does not exclude other duties as assigned. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Identify appropriate patients for clinical studies
  • Call patients with reminders of their appointments
  • Set up and take down equipment for patient testing
  • Escort patients during their research visit
  • Obtain informed consent from eligible patients
  • Maintain logs of patient screening, surveys and visits
  • Conduct standardized assessments of patients via clinic or home visit
  • Actively communicate and update supervising study coordinators and/or investigators on patient enrollment and data collection status via verbal and written communication
  • Assist the PI in ordering supplies for the research studies as needed using the SAP system.

 

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

High School Diploma or GED required. Two years of related experience required. Additional education may substitute for experience.

 Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

           Excellent oral and written communication skills and interviewing techniques.

Carries out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision. Makes decisions and establishes work priorities on essentially procedure-oriented operations.

Knows the informal policies, procedures, and practices necessary to conduct the normal function of a specific section, unit, or work area. Is aware of the role of the position and its potential impact on the working unit.

 

Technical qualifications or specialized certifications:

  • Will need to complete hazardous shipping certification, HIPAA and IRB course work

 

Any specific physical requirements for the job:

  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended period of time
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard
  • Communication skills using the spoken word
  • Ability to see within normal parameters Ability to hear within normal range Ability to move about
  • Ability to attend to information presented one-on-one and during staff meetings.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
