Research Technologist

General Summary

Requires a proficient laboratory technician with a sophisticated understanding of techniques and a solid foundation in the underlying science gained from education and personal experience.  Participates in the design of experiments, analyzing data, may contribute to manuscripts.  May have independent project and/or participate in direction/supervision of the laboratory.  May present at departmental/divisional meetings.  Will provide training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis.

 

Essential Job Functions

Performs testing for antibody and antigens in clinical specimens (blood, sputum, environmental, exhaled breath condensates) using the latest immunoassay methods, the results of which are directly used in the diagnosis and treatment of human allergic diseases.

Instructs, and performs methods of processing allergy, pulmonary and general immunology blood specimens for research.  Uses detailed knowledge in identifying, processing, and evaluating sputum and blood constituents for ongoing research using extensive knowledge of microscopic techniques.

Evaluation of human sera for IgE anti-allergenic components using the ImmunoCAP250 and ISAC (Immunosorbent Allergen Chip) assay technology in clinical and research studies.

Participates in planning experiments and performs/evaluates/interprets test results utilizing extensive experience, detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures/practices in cooperation with the principle investigator or company sponsoring the research.

Selects, develops, performs, and evaluates research methods; operates appropriate equipment.

Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments.  Manufactures and maintains all growth media for mold and fungal cultures.  Has knowledge of proper antibiotics to inhibit certain bacterial contamination of cultures.

Analyzes data, formulates conclusions, and creates appropriate statistical presentations, including graphs and charts for the purpose of reporting research/laboratory results and quality control.

Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate, and/or format data and/or test reports.

Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens, pulmonary specimens, and indoor environmental samples.

Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling and disposal of hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the laboratory.

Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training.

Monitors biohazard/radiation safety standards and proper handling of hazardous chemical and biological agents and radiation sources in the laboratory.

Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Keeps current inventory of reagents and equipment specific to the laboratory requirements.

Monitors equipment performance and maintenance schedules.  Performs routine repair and/or replacement of standard parts.

Evaluation of human serum for IgG/IgG4 anti-allergenic components using the ImmunoCAP system (FEIA) assay technology in research studies.

In-house study coordinator duties, including receipt, inspection and distribution of samples, maintaining communication with principle investigators for direction and updates of ongoing studies and approving assays/results to insure timely reports.

Administrative duties, including recording patient demographics, determining insurance eligibility, compiling medical records and charts and communicating any concerns with health providers.

 

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

Requires bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other related field.

Some related post-undergraduate work experience.

 

Preferred qualifications:

Experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques, coupled with a survey knowledge of biological sciences, chemistry, or physics

 

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Exchanges routine and special information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication skills.

Biohazardous conditions such as the risk of radiation exposure, fumes, or airborne particles, and/or toxic, or caustic chemicals are present in this work environment, which mandate attention to safety considerations.

Near vision to see objects clearly within 20 inches

Sharp focus to adjust vision when doing close work that changes in distance from eyes

Full spectrum vision to identify and distinguish color

Handling by seizing, hold, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with the hand or hands but without finger dexterity

Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s); for example, using a keyboard

Communication skills using the spoken word

Occasionally lifting and carrying objects weighing 10 pounds or less

Occasionally pushing and/or pulling objects weighing 30 pounds or more

Starting Salary Range: $13.73 – $18.87

Employee group: Full-Time

Employee subgroup: Non-Exempt

Schedule: Working 40 hours per week; Monday-Friday between 8:30 – 5:00pm

Location: Johns Hopkins East Bayview Campus

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
