Shriver Hall Technical Coordinator

General Summary/Purpose:

Shriver Hall on Johns Hopkins’ Homewood Campus houses Shriver Auditorium, the largest space on campus for performances and other events.  In 1939, Alfred Jenkins Shriver left the university money through his estate to build a hall.  Construction of the facility was completed in 1954.  A substantial renovation was undertaken in 2017-2018 with the Auditorium, lobby and other public spaces opening for spring semester 2019.

With new audio-visual systems, upgraded interiors, upgraded lighting, and other improvements, this technical coordinator position will serve a critical role in supporting and optimizing the new capabilities of the renovated facility.  Specifically this position will:

  • Oversee all technical aspects of all events in Shriver Hall Auditorium, Boardroom, Clipper Room and classrooms.  
  • Work with the Scheduling & Events Office in planning all events in Shriver, oversee all changeovers, load-ins and load-outs for events.
  • Coordinate and instruct any staff, student employees and independent contractors who work during events as stage managers or technical assistants.
  • Oversee the technical operations and maintenance of the audio visual equipment installed in the building.

This position reports to the Multimedia Services Manager of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Primary person responsible for all technical elements of all events in Shriver.
  • Able to work nights and weekends as needed, flexible schedule based on event and building needs.
  • Provide all stage, production, sound, lighting and technical needs for all events/performances in Shriver Auditorium to include, lighting, audio visual, administrative, live audio mixing, sound reinforcement, setting up A/V equipment, microphones and all stage management.
  • Acts as a liaison between multiple departments on campus to coordinate all technical support for events in Shriver, including the conductor, artistic directors, musicians, dancers, stage managers, etc. to ensure a quality and safe production
  • Coordinate with rental groups and invited guest artists to fulfill their rider and/or technical needs for events.
  • Coordinate a Shriver schedule of events including Admissions Tours, performances, rehearsals, lectures, conferences with Events and Scheduling.
  • Understand and support the goals for all programming.
  • Coordinate and oversee instruction for all technical personnel and stage managers who will work events.
  • Supervises crew of student staff that assist during rehearsals and events.  This includes hiring, training and evaluating performance.
  • Responsible for process of securing the auditorium at the end of all events, reporting damages along with any maintenance and repair needs.
  • Manage budget for equipment maintenance, repair, and replacement including preventative maintenance plan.
  • Develop and keep updated a technical package for Shriver Auditorium.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • High School Diploma/GED required. Four years related experience required. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors/Master’s degree in a technical area of the performing arts, event management or similar field preferred.
  • Crestron DigitalMedia Certification (DMC-E-4K) and/or AVIXA CTS is a plus.
  • 5 years of professional experience in technical and logistical supervision and support for a large performance/lecture venue and/or event production with a combination of experience in theater lighting design, live event sound and theater production strongly preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Current knowledge of all fire and safety codes and procedures.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, excels at building cross-functional collaborations.
  • Must be able to work closely and collaboratively with staff and colleagues from a broad spectrum of the university’s offices and departments, as well as guest artists, guest speakers and contacts at local arts organizations.
  • Professional demeanor, customer service focused, superior written and verbal communication skills, comfort in high-pressure situations, adaptable, creative solution-oriented problem solver.
  • Ability to do long-range planning.
  • Ability to assess performance of personnel.
  • Ability to work long hours and nontraditional shifts: evenings and weekends due to performance schedule.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

  • Mastery of technical aspects for sound reinforcement, audio mixing, lighting, film and video.
  • Experience with multimedia distribution systems, preferably Crestron.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Supervises crew of student staff that assist during rehearsals and events.  This includes hiring, training and evaluating performance.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
