Sr Financial Analyst

General Summary/Purpose

  • The Center for Innovation in Graduate Biomedical Education (CIGBE) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHUSOM) is an incubator for the development, testing, and dissemination of new paradigms for graduate biomedical education. Innovations created in CIGBE address the serious challenges currently facing biomedical education and research. CIGBE brings together faculty, students, staff and experts from partner institutions and corporations to develop, execute, evaluate and refine new ideas for the effective teaching of biomedical information and skills. These innovations synergize strongly with efforts to leverage the full power of biomedical knowledge to the service of clinical medicine.  CIGBE, along with several other offices, is part of the office of the Associate Dean for Graduate Biomedical Education (“Office of GBE”).
  • The Sr. Financial Analyst will work closely with the CIGBE director as well as program directors from nine departments and 19 academic degree programs on a number of projects, including calculating the true cost of graduate biomedical education (to include stipends, faculty time, space utilization, and other factors) and the funding sources of graduate biomedical education, and projecting the financial impact of potential new initiatives or changes to existing programs.
  • In addition to business plan creation, financial modeling, and analysis, the Sr. Financial Analyst will oversee annual budgeting and ongoing budget monitoring for CIGBE and the other offices within the Office of GBE, and will perform or oversee accounting transactions for those offices.  The Sr. Financial Analyst will track revenue generated by projects in CIGBE and GBE, and will manage dashboards and support PowerBI and Microsoft 365 Dynamics analytics to support data-driven decision-making. 
  • The Sr. Financial Analyst will work closely with CIGBE, the Office of GBE, the Administrator for JHUSOM Education, and faculty, staff, and students from throughout JHUSOM, in addition to other JHU divisions and representatives from industries. 
  • This position reports to the Director of CIGBE.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Financial Management, Accounting, & Reporting:

  • With the Director of CIGBE, develop and implement business plans that promote growth and sustainability for CIGBE and its initiatives. 
  • Develop and maintain financial reports to aid in the launch and management of new initiatives and programs.  These reports will be tailored for both internal (JHUSOM) and external partners. 
  • With the Director and others, develop and manage budgets, including variance analyses, associated with CIGBE, CIGBE initiatives, and offices within the Office of GBE.
  • Manage Microsoft PowerBI-based systems used in CIGBE projects.
  • Manage or oversee A/P and A/R for CIGBE, CIGBE initiatives, and the Office of GBE, to include creating and submitting invoices, processing payment requests and expense reimbursements, depositing checks and gift donations, submitting eforms, sponsored projects, and ordering/procurement.
  • Generate and present regular accounting reports.

 

  Financial Analysis & Planning:

  • Develop tools for financial forecasting and trending to assist CIGBE and JHUSOM leadership in planning new educational programs and concurrent infrastructure needs.
  • Create business plans for new initiatives and analyze financial impact on SOM Education.
  • Analyze and interpret fiscal patterns to project future expenditures and revenue streams, when considering external partnerships for CIGBE. 
  • Support strategic planning processes for CIGBE and the Office of GBE
  • Support the Associate Dean for Graduate Biomedical Education in efforts such as determining graduate student stipend, managing tuition waivers, and assessing the impact of these variables on JHUSOM programs.
  • Analyze complex financial data and extract relevant information using the various accounting systems and communicate necessary information to CIGBE leadership.    
  • Collect and use data to determine fiscal year performance and accuracy of past trend prediction. Perform complex statistical, cost, and financial analysis of data reported in the various accounting systems. 
  • On a regular and continuous basis, exercise administrative judgement and assume responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of operations within CIGBE. 
  • Use various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports. 
  • Support management of CIGBE initiatives. Depending on the initiative, will facilitate relationships; support faculty or graduate students; plan and implement meetings or retreats, etc.
  • Support the writing of the financial sections of grant proposals and support other fundraising efforts.
  • Support collaborations with partners such as JHM Business Development and Strategic Alliances, and Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures and others.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on CIGBE and CIGBE programs to internal and external audiences.  

 

         Academic Management:

  • Support use of video-teleconferencing in the CIGBE office.
  • Serve as a representative of CIGBE, and sometimes JHUSOM, at internal and external meetings.   
  • In collaboration with all partners in JHUSOM Education, seek to support graduate students and contribute to creating a healthy and productive learning environment.  

 

Scope of Responsibility

  • Demonstrate a knowledge of how to represent CIGBE and JHUSOM appropriately.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the goals, standards, policies and procedures of CIGBE, JHUSOM and JHU. 
  • Demonstrate awareness of and efforts to support compliance with goals, policies and procedures of external partners when these are consistent with JHU policies.   
  • Demonstrate an ability for self-direction and initiation, including an ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrate the ability to discern between appropriate and inappropriate disclosure of confidential and strategic information.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business, or related field.
  • Minimum of five years financial/accounting experience required.
  • Additional education may substitute for some experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalence formula. Additional experience may substitute for some experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of graduate program financial management
  • Knowledge of SAP accounting system
  • Experience with the NIH grant funding process
  • Knowledge of NIH training grants management. 

 

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge in the use of financial software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and/or word processing is required.
  • Experience using data analytics systems such as (or similar to) Microsoft PowerBI
  • Demonstrated experience in accounting or financial management.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex financial information to diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience working positively and collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong problem-solving skills

            $2M   Oversee annual budgeting and monitoring for CIGBE and Office of GBE

Starting Salary Range:  $57,544 - $79,047

Employee group:  Full Time

Schedule:   8:30am – 5:00pm / Mon – Fri; Weekends and evenings as required

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
