General Description

  • Founded in 1925 as the nation’s first university eye clinic, the internationally-renowned Wilmer Eye Institute specializes in the diagnosis and management of complex medical and surgical eye disease, and is the largest research and clinical ophthalmic enterprise in the United States. Wilmer is the preeminent provider of routine eye care and refractive, optical, cosmetic, and eye trauma services for the Mid-Atlantic region, and is the only designated eye trauma center in Maryland. In addition to our main location at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Wilmer has nine satellite locations across central Maryland, including two ambulatory surgery centers.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Responsible for working with the Sr. Director of Development and other development team members in the planning, implementation and management of major and principal fundraising efforts for the benefit of the Wilmer Eye Institute. Lead the development efforts for one or more specific division, research center and/or satellite clinics within the department, working directly with a senior faculty member on establishing priorities for their individual research, as well as, for the division/center/satellite. Manage a portfolio of major and principal prospects, conducting appropriate identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities. Work closely with faculty, administrators, volunteers and patients, as well as professional colleagues to accomplish fundraising goals. Supervise an Assistant Director of Development. Some travel will be associated with this position.

 

Specific Responsibilities

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching and clinical programs and priorities of the Wilmer Eye Institute, in order to represent these needs both internally and externally.
  • Serve as development office liaison and gift officer to one or more clinical divisions, centers of excellence and/or satellites within the Department.
  • Manage a portfolio of 100 prospects with the goal to personally solicit, or arrange for volunteer or institutional solicitation, for major gift support to fund the priority needs of the Wilmer Institute. The focus will be on gifts in the range of $100,000 to $3+ million.
  • Complete 90 – 110 prospect and donor visits per year; performance targets also include benchmarks for funds raised, proposals developed and submitted, among others.
  • Work with faculty and volunteers to identify and evaluate giving potential of prospects through personal visits and research, develops and implements appropriate cultivation and solicitation strategies, including cultivation events.
  • Personally communicate with, visit, and solicit major/principal prospects and donors.
  • Prepare and direct preparation of case statements, major proposals, solicitation letters and other cultivation and informational material for prospects and donors.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of all development procedures of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and the Wilmer Eye Institute.
  • Represent the Wilmer Development Office in internal and external committees and advisory groups.
  • Oversee the work of an Assistant Director of Development including the management of the annual fund program that is the responsibility of each Development team.

 

Skills

  • The Sr. Associate Director must possess effective communications skills, be highly organized, have strong written and analytical skills and be capable of developing solid relationships with faculty and grateful patients. The Sr. Associate Director must have significant high-end major gift development experience including the direct, personal solicitation of prospects. Supervisory experience is required. This individual must be able to manage several projects simultaneously, understand the need to re-evaluate priorities on a regular basis, and flourish in a fast-paced atmosphere. A team mentality with a willingness to collaborate is necessary. Demonstrated management and leadership skills are needed.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Five or more years of professional development experience, including personal solicitations of major gifts, with a documented record of productivity, preferably in an academic/medical setting.
  • Some planned giving experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent writing skills required.
  • Ability to thrive in an extremely fast-paced environment is essential.

  • The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
