General summary/purpose:

 

The Sr. Research Specialist will manage projects that will involve a broad range of technical expertise and data analysis. The person is expected to have a thorough understanding of scientific principles; expected to read the literature to design experiments, import new techniques to the lab, generate data, run software pipelines and to contribute in interpretation of the data.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

 

Research and Development:

 

This position will manage projects that will involve a broad range of technical expertise.

The person is expected to have a thorough understanding of scientific principles; expected to read and synthesize the literature to design experiments, import new techniques to the lab, and to contribute in interpretation of the data.

 

  • Exercise independent judgment while participating in the planning of experiments and evaluating and interpreting results.
  • Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures, and techniques gained through previous training and experience.
  • Uses various software packages to assemble, manipulate, and/or format data or test reports.
  • Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and troubleshoot situations needing special attention.
  • Under the general supervision of the Sr. Laboratory Manager, the Sr. Research Specialist will implement high throughput DNA methylation and chromatin analysis using state of the art next generation sequencing platforms.
  • Responsibilities include the daily operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of sequencing equipment and computers.
  • Coordinates the processing of samples, interacts with the users, performs quality control, maintenance duties and processing of raw data to make it available to users.
  • Follows established molecular biology procedures and protocols to perform next generation sequencing (NGS) experiments. Demultiplexing of raw data and transferring to storage cluster.

 

Laboratory Operations:

 

  • Meet with investigators to help plan experiments from standpoint of correct scientific design.
  • Follows established molecular biology procedures and protocols accurately to perform next generation sequencing experiments.
  • DNA/RNA library preparation i.e. WGBS, RNA-seq, WES, ChIP-seq and capture-seq libraries.
  • Sample quality control, qPCR quantification and loading onto flowcells.
  • Operation of the HiSeq2500, HiSeq4000 and MiSeq sequencing systems.
  • Analytical processing and data management.
  • Operate laboratory equipment such as Covaris Focused-ultrasonic sonicator, Agilent Bioanalyzer, Real-time PCR system, NanoDrop and Qubit.
  • Ensuring adequate and accessible stocks of general lab use for both reagents and supplies.
  • Design experiments and import new techniques to the lab.
  • Maintain, optimize and troubleshoot protocols and workflows. Ensure their correct implementation throughout the laboratories.
  • Assist investigators with projects, analyzing and interpreting data and to prepare manuscripts.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, data records and laboratory notebook.
  • Following best practices guidelines for experiments.
  • Work in collaboration with scientists and staff to address research questions involving the migration, management and analysis of next-generation sequencing data.
  • Maintain and run software pipelines for quality control and alignment of DNA and RNA sequencing data.
  • Process raw genomic data to a usable form for researchers in the lab and assess the quality.
  • Organize data in off-site storage cluster.
  • Responsible for the movement and backup of data over all storage locations.
  • Responsible for preparation of data files and reports to assist fellow project members.
  • Interface with principal-investigator and collaborators in providing laboratory data—including format design, data systems, etc.
  • Contributing to general maintenance of the laboratory, equipment and supplies.
  • Lab freezer monitoring and respond to freezer alarms or failures.

 

Teaching and Training:

 

Ensure that junior members of the laboratory are appropriately trained.

Import new laboratory techniques and train others to use.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Bachelor's degree in molecular biology, biotechnology, genetics or related field required plus four years’ experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.

 

Or,

 

Master’s degree in molecular biology, or genetics plus two years of experience in comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.

 

Computer proficiency and familiarity with UNIX computing environment necessary. Experience with processing raw Illumina sequencing data preferred. Experience with Bash, shell scripting, FastQC, Samtools, Picard Tools, and Bismark is a plus.

 
Proven track record of organizational skills is a must. Experience with DNA/RNA sample processing, qPCR, target capture, and QC analysis preferred. Additional experience is preferred. A thorough understanding of scientific theory, principles, and practice required.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
