General Summary/Purpose

 

The Center for American Indian Health (CAIH) is located administratively within International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The core activities housed at CAIH include research studies of infectious diseases and behavioral health, and a training program.

 

Family Spirit is an evidence-based and culturally tailored home visiting intervention delivered by Native American paraprofessionals as a core strategy to support young, vulnerable Native parents from pregnancy to 3 years post-partum.  Parents gain knowledge and skills to achieve optimum development for their children. Family Spirit consists of up to 39-months of in-home parent training and support that has been designed, implemented and rigorously evaluated by Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health in partnership with the Navajo, White Mountain Apache, and San Carlos Apache Tribes since 1995. Family Spirit is currently being replicated with communities around the country, through training and technical assistance provided by the Family Spirit replication team.

 

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

 

  • Provides administrative and project support for the Center’s Family Spirit replication team, which is primarily based in Chinle, AZ with colleagues located in Albuquerque, NM and Baltimore, MD.
  • Assists with preparation of training materials and supplies for regularly scheduled Family Spirit trainings with affiliate sites.
  • Assists with coordinating meeting and training plans and making travel arrangements.
  • Assists with drafting and editing Family Spirit related correspondence, and screening incoming correspondence.
  • Assists with facilitating Family Spirit communication including a website, newsletters, webinars and other outreach to affiliate sites.
  • Assists in the development or refinement of health education materials, including curriculum, training materials, and related ancillary materials for the Family Spirit Program.
  • Facilitates Family Spirit office organization in Chinle, AZ including purchasing and inventory of supplies, facilitating maintenance and repair of project vehicles, and facilitating information technology (IT) needs.
  • Locates and compiles information and formats reports, graphs, tables, records, and other sources of information. 
  • Assists with special projects and events.
  • Travels to trainings and meetings with overnight travel as needed.
  • Assists with other Chinle-based Center projects as needed, and maintains knowledge of all of the Center’s projects and assists with other Center duties as they arise.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two years of related experience
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

 

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

Technical qualifications or specialized certifications

 

  • Current driver’s license issued by the state of residence and good driving record required.
  • This position will maintain background clearance as required by the employer and any collaborating agencies.

 

Any specific physical requirements for the job

 

  • Ability to travel with overnight stays required as needed.  Some evening, weekend and holiday work may be required.

  • During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

  • The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
