Receiving and Distribution Assistant

General summary/purpose:

The position of Receiving and Distribution Assistant is responsible for coordinating all deliveries and transfers to and from the Sheridan Libraries Technical Services Department at the Johns Hopkins Mount Washington Campus. The Technical Services Department is responsible for purchasing, accounting for, and providing access to all formats of library materials acquired by the Sheridan libraries. As such, our department receives hundreds of deliveries every month. This position reports to the Head of Technical Services and interacts with a wide diversity of shipping vendors. The position also works closely with Collections Services to facilitate cross-campus deliveries. In addition to overseeing mailroom activities, the position also plays a crucial role in preparing and labelling books for shelving. Communication, attention to detail, and multitasking are required in an ideal candidate.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Receive, open, inventory and route USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL, and Office Depot deliveries;
  • Coordinate bin transfers between Mt. Washington, MSEL, and LSC;
  • Label rush and standard orders, as well as various other book preparations;
  • Communicate with shipping vendors when necessary;
  • Coordinate books for sale processing;
  • Coordinate transfer of gifts for cataloging from MSEL to Mt. Washington;
  • Help in processing of special collections transfers;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications:

  • High School diploma/GED required.
  • One year of related experience required. Additional education may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • High attention to detail;
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds;
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills;
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask, and manage time effectively.

Starting Salary Range: $12.97 - $17.87/ hour

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
