Clinic Nurse

General Summary

 

The Department of CPA is seeking a full time Clinic Nurse that will provide support to the Executive Health program located at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC. 

 

Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Knows the formal and informal departmental goals, standards, policies and procedures which may include some familiarity of other departments within the school/division. Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department
  • Coordinates care for a group of primary patients to achieve clinical and organizational outcomes
  • Creates orders for Executive Health visits in EPIC prior to appointments for faculty to approval the day of appointments
  • Manages and implements the clinical and technical aspects of the Executive and Preventive Health Program.  Ensures the area is in compliance with Joint Commission requirements
  • Educates patients on preventive health issues, clinical findings and disease processes throughout the day.  Explains and demonstrates glucometer to patients that have just been diagnosed with diabetes
  • Obtains patient consent prior to stress test, perform brief exam with electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation, determine contraindications for stress testing, administer and supervise safe reproducible cardiopulmonary exercise tests and graded exercise tests
  • Consult physician when needed
  • Responds to medical emergencies. Daily checks of emergency crash cart and defibrillator, weekly defibrillator test, monthly transfer of defibrillator data
  • Prepares patients for stress tests and ECGs.  Vital signs (VS),  venipuncture, ankle brachial indexes, ear irrigation, pulmonary function testing, vaccinations, B12 injections, body composition, chaperone gynecology exam and obtain specimensInternal Medicine patients - VS, vaccinations, medication reconciliation, occasional ECGs and labs
  • Provides evidence-based care based on nursing process, policies, procedures, and protocols of Sibley Memorial Hospital
  • Provides direction to/management of other team members to promote quality, safety, and excellence in care
  • Works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary health care team to optimize team performance and patient outcomes
  • Triages phone calls and electronic advice requests from patients and determines need for medical assessment
  • Assesses lab results and implements intervention in consultation with primary providers
  • Triages calls from clients and their support staff; determines and implements follow-up plans
  • Identifies care continuity needs of patients; generates and pends orders to primary providers for signature
  • Assists primary providers with maintaining electronic medical records; scans outside results into system, updates immunization history, updates health maintenance records, acts on overdue health maintenance items
  • Assists administrative staff in scheduling patients for consult appointments, if necessary
  • Provides patient education for self-care chronic disease management
  • Responsible for other clinical duties as assigned

  • Accountable for own patient care decisions
  • On a regular and continuous basis, exercises administrative judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area

 

Qualifications

 

Baccalaureate degree, Associate degree, in nursing from an accredited School of Nursing required. Eighteen months of experience as a registered nurse.

 

Required Licensure

 

Current registered nurse license in the District of Columbia, or licensed in compact state. Must maintain active licensure throughout employment.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

  • Knowledge of nursing process; social, behavioral, biological, and physical sciences; safety and scientific inquiry process and application to the skill performance; leadership and management as normally acquired through completion of a bachelors program in nursing
  • Knowledge of current health care environment
  • Knowledge of general physiologic monitoring and patient care equipment such as defibrillator and glucometer monitor
  • Successfully completes all training courses required for access to Epic and other clinical software systems
  • Requires effective use of resources and cost awareness
  • Ability to analyze data to synthesize and summarize information and to make judgments regarding patient care
  • Highly effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills to establish working relationships that foster optimal quality patient care
  • Ability to use a computer keyboard to input and obtain data
  • Ability to operate personal computer to access email, computerized scheduling and documentation systems, and other basic office support software including Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to document legibly using a writing instrument
  • Ability to apply principles of evidence-based practice, scientific process, and service excellence in practice
  • Ability to interact successfully with the public. Ability to perform effectively despite sudden deadlines and changing priorities. Ability to maintain personal composure in high stress situations
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are required to service a diverse customer base
  • Ability to demonstrate and convey a favorable image of the organization and to conform to proper standards of professional dress, attitude and demeanor
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills required to interact with patients, patients’ families/visitors and clinical staff
  • Ability to perform with a high degree of accuracy and with meticulous attention to detail.  Demonstrate a strong ability to use initiative and judgment and to identify, analyze and solve problems
  • Ability to demonstrate self-direction and initiation. Ability to work independently and as a part of a team

 

Physical requirements for the job

 

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, radiation, and pharmacological agents
  • Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time
  • Work requires lifting of 35lbs without assistance, unless special accommodations are in place. When lifting weight above 35lbs assistance or assistive lifting devices should be used

Starting Salary Range: $59,159 - $81,406

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
