General Description


Reporting to the Director of Campus Operations and Technology, the Events Manager is responsible for creating a special events department and developing a strategic plan that charts a path forward that supports 2,500 events on campus annually, while managing a $1.5 million events budget. The role of the Events Manager is to work with internal and external customers to develop a strategic approach to events management that includes devising marketing campaigns, for maximum attendance; creating event themes, that supports the mission and/vision for programs or initiatives; and develop a plan of execution for onsite coordination of events. Responsible for ensuring supervision of daily events at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), this manager has the responsibility for events strategy and implementation for high level events to include Dean’s Events, Graduation Ceremony, Anniversary Events, Public Officials, Foreign Leaders, and dignitaries.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works with internal customers to develop events strategies for large-scale, international, high level events for the school (all three campuses in Washington, D.C. ; Nanjing, China; and Bologna, Italy) including Alumni Events, Development Events, Dean’s Office, Board of Trustees, Admissions, Commencement, Public Officials, Foreign Leaders, Dignitaries, etc., identifying goals, target audience, and marketing strategy for each event.
  • Confers with Senior Advisor to the Dean and the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs to plan School convocations, including commencement.
  • Leads strategic planning session for the development of new program initiatives to present to SAIS Leadership for approval. Researches opportunities to strengthen existing events and commencement ceremonies, including production, facilities, logistics and rehearsals.
  • Oversees the Sr. Events Coordinator in developing the creative design and theme of events.
  • Has events budget responsibilities of $1.5 million, manages $150,000 budget for commencement.
  • Submit proposals for budget increases to the Sr. Associate Dean for Operations and Finance.
  • Oversees the Sr. Events Coordinator in managing daily expenditures and reconciliations, and providing events budget reconciliation reports at the conclusion of events.
  • Has the authority to negotiate, enforce, and approve vendor contracts on behalf of the School. Review vendors and services provided regularly to maintain competitive, up-to-date pricing.
  • Oversees the Sr. Events Coordinator in recruiting, selecting, and directing volunteer staff for academic convocations and other events such as commencement and receptions.
  • Oversees the support of multimedia needs.
  • Prepare reports analyzing events effectiveness and make necessary improvements and adjustments.
  • Monitor trends in event planning and survey other academic institutions regarding their practices.
  • Developing and communicating events policies and procedures to all staff.
  • Requires domestic and/or international travel.


Bachelor's degree required; Minimum four years related experience, particularly related to operations, student affairs, facilities and/or event management. Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships, experience supervising students in a college setting;Experience delivering exceptional customer service; Working knowledge of audio/video equipment coordination and the use of various computer applications (i.e. word processing, database, spreadsheets, email and internet);Understanding of and appreciation for working with diverse populations.
