General Description

The Department of Cognitive Science and the Center for Language and Speech Processing are looking for a lab manager to work on studies of language processing and learning in humans and machines, under the guidance of Dr. Tal Linzen and Dr. Ben Van Durme. This is a one year fixed term position with possibility of renewal for a second year.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:

Programming online experiments: This position is responsible for designing and programming human online behavioral experiments conducted using platforms such as Amazon Mechanical Turk. This may include adapting existing web applications or creating custom-made ones, as well as setting up a web server and a database to store the results. Finally, the position will be responsible for monitoring the progress of the experiment and ensure the quality of the data. This aspect of the position requires software engineering experience, preferably in Python and JavaScript.

Testing in the lab: This position is responsible for recruiting and interacting with all participants in studies conducted in the lab, and for testing subjects on a range of experiments. This aspect of the position includes helping design stimuli and test material, as well as supervising undergraduate research assistants in recruiting and running participants.

Maintaining infrastructure: This position is responsible for installing and maintaining lab equipment, including an Eyelink eye tracker and lab computers used for human testing; and for handling the lab's account on the Maryland Advanced Research Computing Center (MARCC). This aspect of the position requires familiarity with the UNIX operating system.

Statistical analysis: The position will help with the statistical analysis of the results of lab and online experiments. Requires literacy in contemporary statistical methods and experience with the R statistical programming language.

Additional: Interact with outside vendors; assist with coordinating lab meetings, talks, conference trips and visits; assist with manuscript preparation and submission.

The lab manager will be encouraged to attend seminars and to be involve in the intellectual life of the Department of Cognitive Science and the Center for Language and Speech Processing.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related discipline. Three years related experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Additional general requirements:

  • Strong background in Cognitive Science, Computer Science and/or Linguistics
  • Strong organization and interpersonal skills
