General Description

The Director of Foundation Relations for Johns Hopkins University reports to the Senior Director of Foundation Relations for the Johns Hopkins Institutions, and focuses on advancing foundation relations for all Schools (Divisions) except Medicine. The Director will develop and execute a highly strategic approach to securing major foundation support, especially for faculty engaged in current and emerging research with a nationally and internationally competitive edge, and for institutional priority programs related to the University and its community.

Major Responsibilities:

Work in partnership with the Senior Director of Foundation Relations, institutional and Divisional leadership, Development colleagues, and faculty members to maximize independent foundation support for the University

Lead the development and implementation of a high-level strategic and creative approach that responds to relevant Divisional priorities and also identifies and pursues independent foundation resources that can advance other areas of competitive strength

With a focus on grants of at least six figures, work closely with academic leaders, faculty, and Development colleagues to identify prospects, cultivate their interest, build productive relationships, and negotiate proposal content, and submit high-quality solicitations – including planning and staffing visits and site visits

With the help of other Central Foundation Relations staff, provide advice and general guidance to University Development colleagues seeking assistance for foundation support of funding needs that fall below these thresholds

Work closely and effectively with faculty to develop and prepare concepts, letters of inquiry, proposals, and when appropriate, grant reports

Work with the Associate Director of Foundation Relations in the Central office to develop a pipeline of emerging foundations relevant to the University and tailored cultivation/solicitation plans involving high-level volunteers and others as appropriate

Work with the Assistant Director of Foundation Relations in the Central office to ensure that Foundation Relations provides the highest-quality support for selected limited-submission competitions

Manage a portfolio of key foundation prospects and assume primary responsibility in the Foundation Relations office for maintaining/strengthening relationships with local foundations on behalf of the Johns Hopkins Institutions

Manage strategic stewardship of major funders, including presidential annual reports, visits, and site visits, as appropriate

Supervise the Associate Director, Assistant Director, and Senior Development Coordinator in the Central Foundation Relations office, and foster their professional development

Ensure comprehensive coverage and dissemination of foundation news relevant to the University and its community interests

Help develop and deliver presentations for faculty and Development colleagues to increase knowledge about independent foundation funding, build capabilities for foundation grant-seeking among faculty, and foster new sources of support

Qualifications

Qualifications include a minimum of 7 years of experience in foundation fund-raising, preferably in an academic setting, and a record of success in securing high six-figure and seven-figure grants. Bachelor’s degree required; strong preference for an advanced degree. Characteristics/skills: excellent judgment, diplomacy, initiative, team-working ability, critical thinking, creativity, and exceptional writing and speaking skills (including conveying research projects to an intelligent lay audience).
