General Description

In order for Development and Alumni Relations to achieve excellence and an inclusive work environment, while advancing Johns Hopkins’ fundraising and alumni relations, we must value, respect, welcome, and recognize each individual’s uniqueness.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Athletics/Director of Development, this position focuses on planning, executing and monitoring continuous fundraising and engagement activities for alumni, parents and friends who are primarily affiliated with Johns Hopkins Athletics; specifically processing all gifts received by the Blue Jays Unlimited office, assisting in planning and coordinating events, social media, volunteer activities, stewardship engagement strategies, and email, mail, and phone solicitation programs. This position is responsible for reaching and exceeding annual targets to achieve the strategic goal of broadening and strengthening the base of constituent support and engagement with Johns Hopkins University alumni, parents and friends to include all constituents, both donors and prospects that may be affiliated with Johns Hopkins Athletics.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Process gifts and pledge payments through the Homewood business offices, and initiate the transaction processing forms (CPA) to Development Business Services so that tax receipts are issued.
  • Develop annual and multi-year plans; create appropriate goals, time tables, gift tables, and participation targets. Monitor closely; regularly communicate with leadership, staff, and volunteers.
  • Manage all social media for the Athletics Development Office; including updating and promoting initiatives through Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat.
  • Manage the BJU Club annual fund materials and stewardship.
  • Interact daily with external constituents as the first point of contact with alumni, parents, and friends for the Athletics Development Office.
  • Prepare administrative forms, such as travel reimbursements for approval by the Director of Finance and Administration.
  • Assist with maintenance of prospect and donor data in ALADIN.
  • Monitor progress towards annual giving and major gift goals associated with athletics prospects and donors.
  • Maintain general information on the Blue Jays Unlimited portion of the Hopkins sports website.
  • Draft acknowledgement and annual stewardship letters for athletics donors which may include coordinating activities with athletics staff. Draft letters and memoranda, prepare final edits and mail/distribute to appropriate individuals.
  • Assist the Associate and Assistant Director with coordinating and preparing for athletics events which may include scheduling, coordinating logistics, and creating and disbursing pertinent materials to attendees.
  • Proactively assist with identification of meaningful opportunities to engage prospects through notification of events and articles relevant to prospect interests, etc.
  • Disburse and exchange pertinent and non-routine information such as confidential research reports about donors and prospects with internal athletics staff, development officers, and as directed, with individuals external to the School.
  • Create, proofread and edit in-house direct mail and email solicitations.
  • Weekend and overnight travel may be requested in order to provide logistical support of athletics development activities.
  • Attend select home games to engage alumni, parents, and friends through events and BJU informational tables.
  • Other duties as requested.

Note: The position requires someone who can assist with set-up and breakdown of tailgate athletic events. It requires carrying supplies, setting up tents, and moving items across campus.


High School Diploma/GED required. Bachelor's degree preferred. Three years related experience required. Direct experience in development and alumni relations within a higher education setting is strongly preferred. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula (30 undergraduate degree credits/semester hours or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience).

Special Knowledge and Skill

  • Proficiency in the use of web-based applications, email usage, as well as Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and function in a fast-paced environment; proven organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be a highly motivated, goal oriented, self-starter, and have excellent written, oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to work a flex schedule including nights and weekends as required.
