Work Schedule/Hours: Employee will only be called to help in the event that there is an excess of work that can't be completed by the everyday staff in Graphic Arts.
Responsible for production of high-quality artwork used for medical education, patient education, public information and development, and other institutional needs. Graphic materials produced include booklets, catalogs, brochures, displays, posters, invitations, program flyers, stationery, charts and graphs for slides and publication, etc.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Create desktop publishing layouts to be used in the production of publications, books, catalogs, booklets, brochures, stationery, posters, and displays, following established job formats or standards set by the institution. Organize design elements such as photographs, illustrations, logos, type, etc. for production and output. Coordinate with clients and printers to generate high-quality deliverables. Select printing inks and papers that are pleasing, visually enhance the mood/nature of the job, and are cost effective. Working under minimal direction of the director or art director, coordinate all stages of the technical production process on assigned jobs from inception to project completion. Provide client consultations to discuss project needs, time frame and budget. Ability to work from clients and/or department's reference materials and verbal descriptions. Monitor production costs and work in a cost effective manner.
Coordinate work with printers to assure quality control through the various stages of printing production. Prepare files for output, making sure all files are trouble-free and complete. Provide printers with all printing specifications. Initiate and follow through on division paperwork and procedures. Monitor and record accurate billing, time, materials and vendor costs. Archive and organize digital job files. Maintain and advance skills in the use of graphic software programs, keep abreast of technological and stylistic developments in the graphics fields for professional growth. Professional growth and accommodation to rapidly changing graphic technologies are the responsibility of the individual.
Bachelor's degree in fine arts, graphic design, or related field. Some related experience and a portfolio.
Knowledge of the graphic arts, illustration, and photography fields. Ability to conceive artistic ideas, to verbally and graphically communicate creative thinking.
Knowledge of and skill in computer software programs: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat, as well as Powerpoint and others in the creation of art for printed material, slides, and displays. Ability to work with minimal supervision. Ability to handle multiple assignments, and to work under pressure of deadlines. Good organizational skills. Able to make creative and production decisions in a timely fashion. Ability to communicate with and relate well to administration, clients, co-workers, vendors and the public.
Ability to discuss the division's services and to make creative and esthetic recommendations to clients. Excellent communication skills. Knowledge of cost factors of graphic production. Ability to produce artwork that is cost-effective, prepared in line with clients' budgets and prepared in a timely manner. Knowledge of the offset and digital printing process, ability to work with printers to assure quality of printed jobs. Ability to be resourceful. Good learning skills, able to upgrade and acquire new advanced graphic skills on one's own, in addition to basic instruction offered within the division. Able to share knowledge of newly acquired tips and tricks with art staff. Some knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology is useful.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
