Under minimal supervision, coordinates the surveillance activities conducted by the Maryland Emerging Infections Program/Active Bacterial Core surveillance (ABCs), a statewide infectious disease surveillance project sponsored by the CDC. Responsible for the day-to-day leadership, coordination and administrative oversight of research projects. Work with senior staff in the compilation of information related to research projects, grant and budget administration and office management.
Duties and Responsibilities
Oversee ABCs data collection activities and monitor surveillance progress, interact with the Program Manager and other local and CDC study leadership for program planning and implementation, and participate in ABCs strategic planning activities.
Lead surveillance activities for a specific project, oversee data collection activities and monitor surveillance progress, interact with the Program Manager and other study leadership for program planning and implementation, and participate in strategic program planning and activities.
Surveillance activities vary in scope, complexity, and duration in response to public health emerging diseases, and require a high level of knowledge, coordination, and oversight.
Participate in the planning, initiation of, and leadership of other staff in conduct of surveillance activities, and routinely interact with CDC and other program leadership to ensure that program goals are achieved.
Participate in the development of articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Assist with the development of budgets for grants and contracts including new, renewal, and continuation awards.
Work closely with Center Director and senior staff to prepare grant proposals and resubmissions by gathering supporting documentation, preparing budgets, writing budget justifications, and ensuring timelines are met and documentation is formatted as required.
Responsible for taking the lead in the training of and providing assistance to less senior program staff in program implementation, and in maintaining a consistent flow of surveillance data from data collection to submission to CDC for analyses.
Assist the Program Manager with the preparation and submission of protocols to the IRBs of the JHSPH and the Maryland DHMH.
Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in related discipline.
Five years related experience.
Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
Knowledge of surveillance methodology.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and Access databases, with a working knowledge of medical terminology, laboratory reporting, and chart review procedures.
Experienced in handling multiple tasks at once, able to work well independently as well as part of a team, and able to anticipate and identify problems and develop solutions.
Excellent organizations skills and attention to detail.
Highly developed verbal and written skills and interpersonal skills.
Able to respond to varying demands and manage competing priorities.
Able to effectively interact with medical professionals and other staff in order to communicate and achieve study goals.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
