Assistant Director, JUMP

General Summary:

The Johns Hopkins Underrepresented in Medical Professions (JUMP) program was established in 2011 as a pioneering commitment to promote the success of high-achieving students from underrepresented populations who are preparing for careers in medicine and the health professions.  JUMP is a learning community that includes academic support, advising, peer mentoring, community building, career exploration, and leadership opportunities. Through the recent landmark gift of $1.8 billion by Michael R. Bloomberg that is dedicated to meeting 100% demonstrated need with no-loan financial aid packages for first-generation and limited-income (FLI) students and the robust expansion of FLI initiatives and programs at Johns Hopkins University, the JUMP program will grow from a small cohort-based program to a premier 4yr+ enrichment program to serve all underrepresented (URM) and/or FLI students on pre-health pathways at Johns Hopkins. The JUMP program is aligned with and actively attuned to the definition of underrepresented in medicine and holistic review practices of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

 

With the program redefinition projected to begin Fall 2020, the Assistant Director of JUMP will support the Director of JUMP in transitioning the program from its current state by employing a strategic framework for the new program developed by the JUMP Working Group. The Assistant Director will demonstrate cross-cultural nuance in developing and implementing programming specific to URM and/or FLI students and in holistic advising for URM and/or FLI students. As an advocate for URM and/or FLI students in their overall student experience and pursuit of their academic and professional goals, the Assistant Director will establish collaborations, within Johns Hopkins and external to the University, that promote student success and the overall mission of the program. More specifically, the Assistant Director will support collaborative programming between JUMP and the Office of Pre-Professional Advising, other programs in the Center for Student Success, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and the Office of Academic Advising. The Assistant Director will also sustain meaningful connections to community-based organizations in the health care fields, medical schools, and national organizations and programs that support URM and/or FLI students in their pursuit of careers in the health professions.

 

The Assistant Director of JUMP reports to the Director of JUMP in the Center for Student Success.  

 

Essential Job Functions:

Campus Outreach, Collaborative Partnerships, Programming

  • Coordinate workshops, events, and programming that deepens the understanding of diverse pathways and the essential skills based on holistic review practices for URM and/or FLI students pursuing careers in the health professions.
  • Develop ongoing Reflection and Expressive Competence (REC) workshops for all JUMP students as a core program element of the JUMP program and experience.
  • Collaborate with JUMP partners, including the Office of Pre-Professional Advising, Life Design, and the National Fellowships Program to enhance academic and post-graduation planning for JUMP students.
  • Coordinate student’s participation in professional development conferences (e.g. SNMA, LSMA) and visits to regional medical schools.

 

Advising:

  • Provide holistic advising that prioritizes students’ knowledge of the pre-med pathway and specific skill-building for it.   
  • Collaborate with the Office of Pre-Professional Advising and Office of Academic Advising to ensure students are receiving academic advising and success coaching, pre-professional advising, and holistic review advising.
  • Facilitate referrals as appropriate.

 

 

Administrative

  • Recruit, train and supervise JUMP Fellows, recent JHU JUMP graduates who were actively engaged in the JUMP program during their undergraduate studies and pursuing careers in the health professions.  
  • Work with JUMP staff to recruit, train and supervise undergraduate student interns.  
  • Develop and manage programming-related budget and logistical outlines.
  • Conduct program evaluations and produce individual event reports as well as semester participation reports for designated programs.
  • Support the Director in maintaining a system to track student participation JUMP programming and FLI Initiatives.
  • Stay abreast of current trends of URM, first generation, and/or low-income college students pursuing careers in the health professions.
  • Keep abreast of national trends in higher education and student success, remain current in the field of pre-health advising, AAMC holistic review practices, and medical school admissions.

 

Education: 

Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, a health-related field or science required.   

 

Experience: 

Required:

Three years’ experience in advising, mentoring or guiding college students; designing innovative programming; and establishing/maintaining collaborative working relationships with professionals. 

 

Preferred:

Five years’ experience as an academic advisor or pre-professional advisor in a higher ed setting, or as a health care professional in a higher education environment.

 

Additional required skills are described below:

  • Demonstrated success working with and developing programming for underrepresented racial minorities (African-American, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, Native-American), first- generation students, and students from low-income families.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity in higher education--particularly science and/or medical education. Familiarity with the academic rigors of pursuing a career in science, medicine or related health professions is preferred.
  • Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Ability to use appropriate judgment when dealing with sensitive issues.
  • Extensive knowledge and experiences managing holistic advising, assessment, academic and student affairs collaborations, diversity, and inclusion. In particular, ability to influence societal and workplace attitudes that honor principles to create a more inclusive community.
  • Demonstrated success in a complex, multi-layered, and data-driven organization.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral, public speaking, writing, and listening skills.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, articulating, operationalizing, and assessing strategic priorities.
  • Proven ability to cultivate trust and credibility with colleagues and to build positive and effective relationships.
  • Proven track record of establishing strategic relationships to strengthen program and service delivery.
  • Must be available and willing to work some evenings / weekends as required for events and programming.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
