Sr. Accountant

The Tax Office is looking for a motivated individual to fill the role of Sr. Accountant. This individual will serve on a collaborative, collegial team that is responsible for ensuring the university’s compliance with matters related to its domestic and international tax obligations.


This individual will serve on a team that is responsible for ensuring the University’s compliance with employment tax matters. This includes compliance reporting, assisting employees with tax issues and communicating with various federal and state governments.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • This individual brings knowledge of accounting principles and tax laws, particularly those that apply to employment tax.
  • This individual has advanced capabilities in using the University’s payroll system to ensure that the data supporting tax filings is accurate and complete and that supporting processes are efficient and effective.
  • This individual is flexible and easily able to adapt to accomplish the University’s priorities and goals.
  • The Senior Accountant contributes to:
  • Preparation and review of federal and state employment tax returns and/or tax remittances.
  • Preparation and review of state unemployment tax returns and/or remittances.
  • Review of federal and state correspondence related to employment and unemployment taxes and preparation of draft response letters for manager review.
  • Development and execution of analytical reviews designed to ensure accuracy and completeness of data sets related to employment taxes.
  • Minimum Qualifications:


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of the laws and regulations that apply to employment tax and taxable income.
  • Experience with large payroll platforms. Experience with SAP a plus.
  • Tax research and writing experience
  • Ability to understand the University’s accounting system
  • Effective writing and communication skills.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Ability to perform tasks independently.
  • Strong analytical skills


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related field.
  • Three years of progressively responsible related work experience. If bachelor's degree is in unrelated field, four years of progressively responsible experience is required.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Starting Salary Range: $32.25 - $56.46 HRLY (Commensurate with experience)

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
