Sr. Financial Analyst

 

About Johns Hopkins University:

Johns Hopkins University has a $6 billion annual operating budget in addition to a $300 million annual capital budget. The University is made up of nine academic divisions, Sheridan Libraries, the Applied Physics Laboratory and several independent institutes.

 

The Office of the VP for Planning and Budget works collaboratively across the University to support high-level strategic planning issues and initiatives including the Strategic Initiatives team, the University Budget Office and the University Administration Business Office (oversees financial planning, analysis and reporting for the university’s central administration business units).

 

University Administration (UA) supports the teaching, research and clinical mission of the University and its divisions by providing common administrative infrastructure and services; identifying and addressing shared challenges; and facilitating collaboration across the University and Johns Hopkins Health System. UA has an annual operating budget of more than $300 million from all funds, includes approximately 25 offices and departments, and has more than 1,400 full-time employees.

 

General Position Description:

The Sr. Financial Analyst will report to the Director of Finance for UA Financial Management and Operations. This person will primarily focus their efforts on the financial analysis and reporting for the central gift reporting business unit. A critical aspect of this position will require communication with the Development Office and donors to have an understanding of their needs and the information they provide. In addition, a deep understanding and tracking of capital commitments and close work with the Facilities and Real Estate team to ensure proper accounting of these.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Track and report all commitments relating to the business unit in collaboration with Facilities and Real Estate, the Development Office, General Accounting and any other departments deemed necessary
  • Assist in the development of budgets and budgets projections related to the business that may impact many departments in UA and academic divisions
  • Oversee the compilation of information related to expenditure and revenue budgets submitted by UA department related to the business unit and must ensure proper accounting treatment working closely with UA’s accounting specialist
  • Establish strong partnerships with Development Office and other key staff in the academic divisions and university (central) administration
  • Assist in the year-end closing process for the UA division by creating and running both standard and ad-hoc reports, analyzing results and identifying issues
  • Develop financial reports for forecasting and analysis, including variance analyst and quarterly projections for annual revenues and expenditures
  • Monitor monthly revenue and expenditures compared to budget and gather supporting documentation
  • Analyze significant discrepancies and prepare written summaries or reports
  • Utilize resources and contacts to help resolve discrepancies
  • Monitor capital projects relating to the business unit and work with accounting specialist and facilities management (where necessary) to be sure accounts are set up properly
  • Conduct in-depth research and analysis on financial, organizational and budget issues to provide senior leadership with information and recommendations
  • Develop presentation materials and memoranda in order to communicate context, findings and recommendations to senior university leadership
  • Represent UA business office for various meetings and committees

  • Works independently and must be able to manage multiple tasks/assignments simultaneously
  • Due to access of confidential information, individual must be discreet and protect that information

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or other related field and/or demonstrated knowledge of financial analysis, budgeting and planning
  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in the area of financial planning and analysis
  • Additional education (Master's in a related field) may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
    • JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

  • Strong technical expertise in the use of Microsoft tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in finance, business, or a related field
  • Johns Hopkins University and SAP experience highly desirable
  • Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
  • Previous higher education experience

  • Demonstrated skills in quantitative financial analysis, including the development of financial models used to forecast financial results under different scenarios

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
