Sr. Financial Analyst

General Summary/Purpose


Johns Hopkins University is a very large, ($6.5 billion in 2020 operating revenues; nearly $10 billion in 2020 net assets and ~$600M in annual capital expenditures) highly decentralized and complex institution, with significant local resource control and decision-making responsibility. The University is made up of nine academic divisions, Sheridan Libraries, the Applied Physics Laboratory and several independent institutes.


The Office of Planning and Budget is a central financial function, reporting under the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, which provides a strategic view to the fiscal management of the University and its divisions.  The Planning and Budget team, led by the Associate Vice President for Planning and Budget, works collaboratively across the University to support high-level strategic planning issues and initiatives and includes the Strategic Initiatives team (this position), as well as the University Budget Office (manages the development, monitoring and analysis of the university’s operating and capital budgets and five year plans).  


The Strategic Initiatives team is an internal consulting team whose work informs decision-making among senior leadership on a wide range of financial strategy and policy issues.  The team works to provide analytic capacity and project management services on issues and initiatives of interest to university leadership at the division and university levels. 


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


  • Work closely with Development and Alumni Relations, Facilities & Real Estate, the University Administration Business Office, General Accounting, other central university functions and divisional staff to manage financial operations, accounting and donor reporting for key programs, projects and initiatives funded by philanthropy
  • Build dynamic and flexible financial models and scenarios for new philanthropy funded initiatives and programs, in consultation with Development and Alumni Relations and other key stakeholders
  • Analyze and synthesize complex financial data and trends, using university systems, databases and standard software packages
  • Develop presentation materials and memoranda in order to communicate context, findings and recommendations to senior university leadership
  • Establish strong partnerships with key staff in the academic divisions and university (central) administration.
  • Work independently to manage multiple tasks/assignments simultaneously


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory)


  • Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, accounting or related field and/or a demonstrated knowledge of financial planning, budgeting and analysis
  • Minimum of five years related financial experience
  • Additional education (Master's in a related field) may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
    • JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in finance, business, public administration or a related field
  • Accounting experience  
  • Working knowledge of general accounting principles and practices
  • Previous higher education experience

The ideal applicant must also have/be:

  • A collaborative working style with excellent consultative, project management, analytic, problem solving, and presentation skills 
  • Demonstrated skills in quantitative financial analysis, including the development of financial models used to forecast financial results under different scenarios
  • Strong knowledge and skill in Microsoft Excel
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills
  • Well organized, flexible, and able to manage multiple challenging projects simultaneously in a fast-paced work setting
  • The ability to build strong relationships with people at all levels of the organization

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
