Location: Responsibilities in both the Washington DC area as well as the Baltimore area. Travel between the two offices will be necessary depending on employer and student case load.

Schedule (hours/days): M-F, 8:30am – 5pm, some evenings and weekends may be required

General summary/purpose:

The Assistant Director, Employer Relations, Global position is charged with building the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School brand internationally as a primary source of talent for global employers with a specific concentration in the Asian market, focusing on employers in China. The dual nature of the position will include educating students about international hiring processes, timing, and competencies which will allow them to thrive in a competitive global employment market.  The Assistant Director will build and maintain relationships with employers for student internship and permanent employment, manage employer/student interactions, coach students on international job search strategy, and assist the Director of Employer Relations with all office initiatives, programming, and strategic planning.  This position will serve as the catalyst for broadening and deepening the current employer and student job search strategy in the global marketplace for the Carey Business School. The Assistant Director will connect multiple engagement efforts to include global and locally based alumni, global employers and other constituents, such as the Development & Alumni Relations team, at Carey and JHU. This position may be based in Baltimore or D.C.  There will be a required 2-3 trips to China/Asia per year.


Specific duties & responsibilities:

Employer Relations

  • Develops and manages ongoing relationships with companies, agencies and organizations, internationally, that leads to employment opportunities (internships and permanent) for students.  Assists Director with developing employer relations strategy, including target organizations and plans for connecting with them.
  • Manages relationships with corporate recruiters in their portfolio, identify new employers and develop relationships with them.   Record and manage contacts in database.
  • Networks with alumni and others sources within assigned area to strengthen and broaden relationship.
  • Coordinates with employer partners to conduct on-campus and virtual employer focused events, info sessions, presentations and interviews, etc.
  • Analyzes relevant recruiting data and determines trends to target specific companies.
  • Markets students to specific companies based on student interest and qualifications, and hiring organization’s recruitment need.
  • Educates employers on best ways to connect with students and on tools available to employers for student interaction and evaluation. 
  • Collects feedback from employers and students on employer events to ensure quality delivery and mutual satisfaction.  Use feedback to make necessary adjustments.
  • Collaborates with other Career Development teammates (Programs & Advising) on projects as necessary.
  • Researches and stays informed in international hiring practices, employment trends and other labor related issues for appropriate industry verticals.
  • Represents Carey at international functions which contribute to the mission of Career Development and the Employer Relations team.
  • Work closely with Student Services and globally aligned student organizations.
  • Partner with faculty who teach subject matter related to industry coverage areas to share and engage industry contacts on campus.

Student Advising

  • Provides student advising/counseling in the area of job search strategy.
  • Work with students 1-1 or in groups to assist in the development of targeted job search preparation usually in the area of industry specialization
  • Determine readiness for direct employer interface and assist in connecting students directly with employers, alumni, etc. 

Career Services Project Responsibility:

Assume responsibility for one or more projects within the Career Services office.  Potential projects include but are not limited to:

  • Employer Communication; prepare and regularly distribute communication to employer partners
  • Point person for employer programming internationally, with a specific focus on China
  • Lead for international student employment programming
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in business, human resources or closely related field required.  Five years related experience, preferably in career services, human resources, and/or recruiting required. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred qualifications:

Master’s degree in human resources, business related field or MBA. 3-5 yrs. experience in corporate/university recruiting, human resources, talent management or career services.  Experience working for a multinational organization and/or internationally. Fluency in written and spoken Mandarin Chinese.


Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Ability to work with individuals and groups, and prepare and deliver presentations. 
  • Must be proficient with technology (MS Office Suite) and interested in identifying and adopting technology to reach and connect with target audiences. 
  • Well-developed interpersonal marketing and communications skills.
  • Open, friendly personable attitude.
  • Demonstrated relationship management skills.
  • Familiarity with CRM technology, such as Salesforce.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
