2020 CTY Baltimore City Emerging Scholars Summer Program Academic Dean

General Summary/Purpose:

The academic dean has primary responsibility for supervising the academic staff, coordinating the academic program, ensuring the quality of instruction, and addressing student performance issues. The academic dean may also be asked to assume the site director’s responsibilities in the site director’s absence.


In addition to promoting appreciation and understanding of CTY’s philosophy, policies, and procedures among the instructional staff, the academic dean fosters communication between the instructional staff and the administrative staff. A key activity of the academic dean is to provide training and support to the instructional staff.


Multiple Postitions Available



A member of the site administrative staff, the academic dean assumes primary responsibility for supervising the academic staff and coordinating the activities of the program. A CTY academic dean’s role is most similar to a dean of faculty’s as he or she supports and guides the instructional staff who come from a variety of educational backgrounds and have diverse teaching skills. Through classroom observations and frequent conferences with staff, the academic dean provides feedback and mentoring on teaching strategies and classroom management.


The dean also addresses student performance issues and oversees the editing of student evaluations. Finally, he or she furnishes logistical support for field trips, class projects, and supplies, and works in collaboration with the site director. The academic dean works on site from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, Monday through Friday for the duration of the six-week program.


As a member of the site administration, the academic dean is expected to:

  • Work together as a team, keeping overall program goals in sight while managing a range of details.
  • Help set the appropriate tone for the community as described in staff handbooks and other program documents.
  • Anticipate and prevent potential problems.
  • Communicate promptly, clearly, and sensitively with other administrators, staff, students, parents, the host institution, and the CTY office in Baltimore.
  • Help the academic and residential/recreational programs work in harmony with each other.
  • Model professionalism.
  • Represent the philosophy and policies of CTY in a manner that fosters cooperation and respect among summer staff, students, host institution staff, and full-time CTY staff throughout the program.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • At least three years of teaching experience.
  • At least one year of experience in a supervisory or administrative role, preferably in an educational setting.


Preferred Requirements:

  • Advanced degree is strongly preferred.
  • Some graduate training in an academic discipline is preferred.


Required Special Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be comfortable using Microsoft Office and other web-based applications.


Internal and External Contacts Required as Part of the Job:

  • Contact with the CTY Baltimore Emerging Scholars co-directors and BCPSS Educational Specialist before and during program; regular contact with site director, instructors, ESOL specialist, SPED specialist, and students throughout program; occasional contact with teacher’s assistants and students’ families as needed.

Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery.
  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone and face to face with internal and external customers and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.
  • Position also requires a degree of mobility common to working in an office environment; bending, kneeling or standing during events and presentations may be required.
  • Staff are required to travel and navigate a school campus with or without accommodations. This may include traversing some long distance across campus. Some lifting and moving may be required.


Supervisory Responsibility:

The academic dean is supervised directly by the CTY Baltimore Emerging Scholars Co-Directors.

The academic dean is the direct supervisor of the instructors, ESOL specialist, and SPED specialist, and the indirect supervisor of teacher’s assistants.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
