ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR DEVELOPMENT

The Robert Packard Center for ALS Research

 

The Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins, a collaboration of leading scientists working aggressively to develop new treatments and a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, seeks to hire a creative, energetic, mission-driven professional to raise funds to support the Center’s mission: to solve ALS and – ultimately – save lives.

 

This is a major and annual gift fundraising position with management responsibilities. Our approach is grounded in strong relationships with our leadership and faculty members.

 

Responsibilities include development and implementation of fundraising and engagement strategies for annual and major gift prospects and donors for the Packard Center. The Associate Director will manage a portfolio of approximately 100 prospects (individuals, grateful patients, foundations, organizations, etc.) capable of providing significant support to the Center, and will conduct appropriate cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities. The Associate Director will work closely with faculty, administrators and patients as well as professional colleagues to accomplish fundraising goals. The Associate Director will manage one volunteer fundraising board and one staff member.

 

The Associate Director is expected to have demonstrated success in managing a diverse, high-dollar portfolio that includes complex prospects (i.e. established donors with multiple interests and existing institutional relationships, large capacity to give, etc.). A strong commitment to and passion for the mission of Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Packard Center, along with the ability to resolve complex problems while maintaining a sense of humor, is critical.

 

The primary duties and responsibilities of the position

 

  • Work closely with the Director, Executive Director, and Science Director of the Packard Center, manage a portfolio of approximately 100 current and prospective donors, including individuals, grateful patients, friends, foundations, and organizations, with the goal to personally solicit annual and major gifts to support the priority needs of the Center.

 

  • Complete approximately 75 prospect and donor visits per year; performance targets also include benchmarks for funds raised and proposals developed and submitted, among others.

 

  • Supervise and mentor one junior team member who will assist in portfolio development; cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies; and managing Packard Center events.

 

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching and clinical programs and priorities of the Packard Center to represent these needs both internally and externally.

 

  • Develop strong relationships and serve as an effective ambassador to external constituencies. This will require regular communication and visits with prospects and donors nationwide. Provide accurate advice regarding specific opportunities and vehicles for giving, both current and deferred.

 

  • Prepare proposals, solicitation letters and other cultivation and stewardship materials for prospects and donors. Attention to detail and proper follow up is critical. Draft communication to prospects and donors on behalf of the Center. Serve as a liaison to volunteers conducting fundraising activities on behalf of the Center; this includes management of the Board of the Packard Center, among others.

 

  • Serve as the Packard Center liaison to the Office of Medical Annual Giving.

 

  • Create stewardship plans for annual and major gift donors in portfolio.  

 

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of all development procedures for Johns Hopkins Medicine and ensure the consistent application of these practices.

 

  • Participate in Packard Center meetings and in meetings and training opportunities through the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine and Johns Hopkins University.

 

  • Represent the Center on internal and external committees and advisory groups.

 

  • Manage the planning, implementation and follow up for development-related activities and events of the Packard Center.

 

 

Posted Qualifications

 

Bachelor’s degree required. Three years related experience, with one year of professional experience required. Three to five years of professional experience preferred.  Experience should include personal solicitation of annual and major gifts, experience working with foundations, and board management. Strong organizational, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills required. Ability to thrive in an intellectually challenging, fast-paced environment and interact with faculty, staff, donors, and volunteers at all levels is essential.

 

Must be a highly motivated, goal-oriented self-starter who is a creative, strategic thinker with the ability to work independently and as part of a team, determine appropriate funding priorities for specific donors, manage multiple and cross-disciplinary projects, and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality. Must handle sensitive interactions with integrity and discretion. Comfortable working within a complex, multi-divisional environment to establish priorities, set objectives and achieve stated goals. Demonstrated motivational and consensus-building skills. Commitment to the use of information technology and the management of database systems. Willingness and ability to travel.

Experience in an academic/medical setting and supervisory experience preferred.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
