Academic Advisor, Pre-Professional

We are seeking an Academic Advisor, Pre-Professional in the Advising Office.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Academic & Career Advising (60%)

  • Assist prospective and current first year and sophomore students in formulating academic plans based on exploration and understanding of their interests, skills, and values in conjunction with the academic curriculum and cocurricular opportunities, and career interests.
  • Coordinate support for sophomores applying to early assurance medical school programs.
  • Create and support existing initiatives that support students who are first-generation college goers, from low-income backgrounds, or from communities otherwise historically underrepresented in the health professions.
  • Develop awareness of the diversity of opportunities in health-related professions and work with students to consider which paths may be most aligned with their values, abilities and interests, including health-related careers outside of medicine.
  • Assist in supporting 400 JHU students and alumni applying to health professions schools annually, including providing essay review and interview preparation.


Programming, Publications, & Event Management (30%)

  • Develop and present workshops that help first year and sophomore students explore health professions and prepare for the application process.
  • Create and update handouts, guides, and social media campaigns to complement advising and programming.


Student Organization Support (10%)

  • Maintain communication with and provide guidance for health-related student organizations.
  • Work as part of a team to achieve established goals in collaboration with campus and community partners.


General

  • Perform additional responsibilities based on the strengths and interests of the team.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability and passion for advising, encouraging, and inspiring a diverse population of students.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently, along with willingness and ability to take direction.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree.
  • Three year's experience.
  • Additional experience may substitute for advanced education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with academic advising or career advising in a pre-health context.
  • Experience engaging with students from lower-income backgrounds and historically underrepresented communities and programs that support them.
  • Familiarity with health professions fields.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, Access, and Powerpoint; Google applications (Docs, Forms, Sheets); website and graphic design; social media marketing.

If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
