Accounting Specialist

We are seeking an Accounting Specialist who will perform routine financial and accounting activities and process financial information from various accounting and information systems. The Accounting Specialist will conduct activities including reconciling accounts, process data, and create reports. This role will assist with reconciliations, student accounts, fund accounting and administrative accounting tasks. Will also perform accounting tasks to maintain financial records and process related data to assist with month end, quarter end and year end close and journal entry preparation. The role will assist with internal control and compliance related tasks stemming from the outcomes from internal audit reviews.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist management with monitoring financial activity to ensure transactions are correct, efficient, and in compliance with JHU policies, procedures and GAAP.
  • Perform research for various accounting and finance projects.
  • Assist other roles within the team with month close, quarter close and year end reporting and other deliverables.
  • Apply knowledge of university and health system regulations as appropriate when performing finance and accounting activities.
  • Assist with preparing monthly, quarterly, yearly reports.
  • Assist with basic analysis of financial data, reconciles accounts, and creates reports.
  • Apply basic knowledge of accounting policies, procedures, and systems on various transactional activity impacting financial reporting.
  • Collaborate and communicate as needed with stakeholders across the institution including the financial team in SOM Central Finance, the JHU Controller’s office, departmental staff, and other central services, e.g. Internal Audit, Human Resources.

Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Focus on details, accuracy and meeting pre-determined deadlines.


Physical Requirements 

  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
  • Occasionally lifting, carrying objects weighing 10lbs. or less.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Basic knowledge of accounting policies, procedures, and systems.
  • Intermediate skill level in Excel, with basic knowledge of Pivot tables, formulas and other functions.
  • Understanding of financial systems from perspective of user.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related field.
  • SAP accounting knowledge.
  • Experience with data reporting tools.

Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination.
