The Department of Otolaryngology, Division of Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery seeks an Aesthetician that would travel between two locations (Baltimore-Greenspring Station, and Bethesda). The Aesthetician will specialize in skin care. Will perform a variety of facial and body procedures intended to increase, improve or maintain the appearance and health of human skin.  


The Aesthetician will work with plastic surgeons or other physicians to perform various skin care procedures on patients undergoing plastic surgery or other operations and may educate patients on the proper ways to care for their skin before and after surgery. This often includes providing special skin formulas and demonstrating how to use them. Increases guest retention by exhibiting a positive attitude and building relationships.  Participates in promotional and marketing efforts throughout the facility.


Cleans and sterilizes equipment/instruments and disposes of contaminated supplies according to CDC, OSHA, state and local guidelines.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities:


Skin Analysis

  • Before treating any client, an Aesthetician must thoroughly analyze the condition of the skin. Using lights and magnifiers to evaluate the overall health of the skin, an Aesthetician determines the best treatment to correct any problem areas.
  • Aesthetician will also check for any breakages in the skin that may interfere with certain treatments. For example, specialists would not perform a chemical peel on a client with open wounds or breaks in the skin as doing so could cause further damage.


Facial Treatments

  • Trained to perform many kinds of facial treatments. Some examples include chemical peels, massage, microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, facial masks, dead cell exfoliation and acne treatments, help prepare the skin for surgical procedures, treat burn victims or help chemotherapy patients.


Patient Education

Must educate the clients on proper skin care.

Teach clients how to avoid common skin allergens; train them in makeup application; show them how to maintain sculpted eyebrows; and demonstrate how to use skin treatments at home.

Educate customers on the proper ways to wash, moisturize, and take care of their skin to prevent blemishes and maintain elasticity. Promotes the consistency of health, wellness, and routine nail care benefits to upsell products and services.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D required. 
  • Applicant must submit proof of completion of 600 hours of training in a cosmetology school or 12 months as a registered apprentice in a licensed beauty salon.
  • Must obtain State of Maryland Aesthetician License, and renewal.  Requires a written exam and a practical skills exam.  Maintenance of continuing education requirements for Aesthetician recertification
  • Adhere to all applicable local and state licensing laws and regulations related to the esthetics services provided, including following any applicable law pertaining to maintaining current Esthetics License.
  • Participate in continuing education to improve effectiveness.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and experience in performing facials, as well as the ability to follow protocols.
  • Must have the ability to perform services using proper draping techniques while maintaining the highest level of professionalism at all times. Scheduling, dependability, and flexibility is a must.



Physical Requirements: 

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.  Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).  Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

Starting Salary Range: $21.43 - $29.49/Hour; Commensurate with experience

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
