Alliance Manager, Bluefield and Translational Funding

The Alliance Manager, Bluefield and Translational Funding (Business Analyst)  will serve as an alliance manager and industry liaison to support partnering efforts for Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV). This role will further support the efforts of JHTV to facilitate new company creation from intellectual property coming from Johns Hopkins University. Responsibilities include alliance management for a multi-year collaboration with a large healthcare investment company (Bluefield), organizing meetings with relevant stakeholders and inbound and outbound business development efforts as they pertain to licensing and business development related to the Bluefield collaboration. The position will also be responsible for leading and directing efforts as well as support of translational funding programs to assist Johns Hopkins University faculty, staff, and students to move early research towards commercialization. 

 

Scope of Responsibility:

  • Works under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director, Ventures.
  • Knows the formal and informal departmental goals, standards, policies and procedures which may include some familiarity of other departments within the school/division.
  • Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department.
  • Performs duties under strict adherence to the University’s Intellectual Property Policy.

 

Decision Making:

  • Makes recommendations but not the final decision on matters regarding alliance needs and translational funding. 

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manages and coordinates relationship between Johns Hopkins University and Deerfield Management and/or other 3rd party translational funding partners including overseeing deliverables and maintaining partnerships.
  • Ensures that day-to-day operating requirements of collaborations are effectively managed and performance objectives are achieved.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with all individuals involved in the alliance.
  • Plans and coordinates implementation activities with the partner(s) and resolve any related issues.
  • Reports results of collaboration activities to JHTV Senior Management.
  • Serves as primary point of contact for internal and external parties involved in the collaboration and facilitates communications among parties.
  • Works to resolve any conflicts informally.
  • Aggregates information on JHU technologies, projects, and/or faculty for presentation across JHTV partnering and translational funding landscape.
  • Prepares statistical and narrative reports on translational activities.
  • Supports translational funding activities at JHTV such as the Maryland Innovation Initiate (MII), Thalheimer Award, and other translational funding programs.
  • Coordinates translational finalist meetings with donors and potential awardees, update meetings with donors and past recipients (including preparation of briefing documents), faculty review sessions including support to faculty not selected for an award, and faculty preparation sessions for finalist presentations.
  • Develops a program evaluation framework to assess the strengths of each program and to identify areas of improvement.
  • Contributes to the development of tools, processes, and strategies employed by the Bluefield alliance and Joint Steering Committee (JSC) to ensure effective coordination of Request For Proposal (RFP) process and management of portfolio of projects (when applicable).
  • Organizes all matters relating to Bluefield and/or other translational funding programs, including scheduling and managing committee meetings within the University, ensuring compliance with all aspects of the alliance agreements.
  • Manages RFP process including marketing to faculty and departments, developing relationships with faculty and departments, identifying faculty that are a good fit for Bluefield and other translational funding program, RFP process tracking, communicating with applicants and coordinating applicant process, and assisting with providing and tracking feedback to applicants.
  • Initiates the process of onboarding selected project(s) (initial project startup process .i.e. helping to set up Hopkins accounting, as well as other project related administrative duties).
  • Contributes to the Bluefield work plan development, 3 year plan to IND.
  • Tracks administrative matters relating to the RFPs for projects and research programs, once launched.
  • Tracks and records funding events in internal JHTV tracking tools such as Salesforce.
  • Creates SOP processes to streamline translational timelines and deliverables.
  • Attends Translational Funding program meetings such as those held by MII, ATIP, etc. and provides JHTV with updates on programs.
  • Identifies potential funding programs that may be a good fit for Johns Hopkins University faculty, staff, and/or students.
  • Provides support to Therapeutic Venture meetings.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelors in life sciences required. PhD in life sciences or MBA strongly preferred.
  • Other advance degrees or combinations with directly related industry experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum of two years of business development experience in life sciences industry.

 

Required Skills:

  • U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident required due to Federal Export Controls.
  • Strategic thinking and self-starter with the ability to develop strong relationships, influence decisions, and establish networks.
  • Ability to juggle many diverse and (sometimes) competing scientific and business situations to ensure successful, long-term partnerships between JHU and other organizations.
  • Ability to work with flexibility on several tasks simultaneously and to meet various concurrent deadlines.
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Experience with Salesforce preferable.
  • Experience with various software applications (e.g. spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical and graphic packages), to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of industry and University employees.
  • Highly organized, resourceful, and detail oriented.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
