General summary/purpose:

Homewood Museum at Johns Hopkins University is making history relevant to today’s students and the public through courses, tours, exhibitions and programs. The museum collects, preserves, and interprets architecture, fine and decorative arts, and artifacts that illuminate the history of the new nation and the lives of all the people who contributed to early Homewood and Baltimore.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • 60%: Assist the Director/Curator with researching and maintaining the permanent collection and period rooms.
    • Updates museum’s furnishing plan and collections plan.
    • Researches and keeps current permanent collection accession files in Past Perfect database and paper files in coordination with the museum’s registrar and assigned volunteers.
    • Updates permanent and study collections records for the paper files located in the period-room notebooks, on the website, in brochures, and other media.
    • Oversees implementation of routine period room maintenance in coordination with house cleaners and registrar. Monitors climate conditions and maintains climate and moisture records for historic house. 
    • Conducts scholarly research, writes brochures and exhibit catalogs on the collection of 19th century decorative arts with the Director/ Curator.
    • Monitors auctions and market for desired objects that are identified in the current collection plan.
    • Oversees the museum’s library.
  • 25%: Assist the Director/Curator with public programming logistics for lectures, workshops, docent training, and development and community engagement events.
    • Confirms speakers, venue space, and parking, oversees program set up, and arranges refreshments and supplies working with the Museum’s Coordinator.
    • Assists the Museum Coordinator in planning logistics for docent training and recruitment, docent and volunteer trips, and assembling learning materials.
    • Maintains museum education supplies and interpretation materials for tours and programs.
    • Assists with tours as needed.
  • 15%:  Assists the Director/Curator in fabricating and installing temporary exhibitions.


Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Three years professional museum experience (minimum) in decorative arts research, collections management, exhibit installation, docent training or a combination of these duties.
  • Related Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Additional (graduate level) education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Demonstrated experience handling artwork and historic objects.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters of Arts in American decorative arts, American studies or history, art history or museums studies with a concentration in American history.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
