Assistant Dean for Teaching and Learning Design

The Johns Hopkins University’s Whiting School of Engineering (WSE) is seeking an Assistant Dean for Teaching and Learning Design (ADTLD) to develop and implement a pedagogical vision for the School and direct the Center for Teaching and Learning Design (CTLD). This leader will be goal-oriented, quality-conscious, results-driven, and intimately familiar with in-person and online learning pedagogical models.


Reporting to the WSE Vice Dean for Graduate Education and Lifelong Learning, the ADTLD will manage a staff of 15 full-time instructional designers and 4 full-time course support specialists dedicated to the mission of improving teaching and learning at the Whiting School of Engineering. The primary functions of the Center for Teaching and Learning Design are to provide: (1) online course design and development support for hundreds of online courses in the Engineering for Professionals (EP) graduate programs and the Lifelong Learning (LL) non-credit professional education programs, (2) support for on-campus faculty in the form of pedagogical training and support, and (3) faculty development opportunities for 600+ adjunct instructors and 500 on-site faculty members in Baltimore, MD.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities


Strategic Leadership and Planning (50%)

  • Create a strategy for supporting all stakeholders across the school.
  • Provide visionary leadership in the instructional design arena, developing and utilizing research-supported pedagogical methodologies and technologies.
  • Participate in the JHU and global online education community to both advance JHU efforts in this arena and identify best practices in online education.
  • In concert with WSE leadership, determine the allocation of human resources to help support course developments across Engineering for Professionals online programs and Lifelong Learning (non-credit) courses.
  • Closely monitor hundreds of course developments at any given time, interacting with staff, faculty and program chairs for reporting and performance improvement purposes.
  • Work with the Engineering for Professionals Faculty Affairs Lead to assist EP program chairs and instructors in the review and improvement of online courses, including regular review of end-of-term course evaluation results.
  • Ensure that all WSE courses comply with university, state and federal codes and policies, including federal Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
  • Manage and advance WSE assessment and evaluation of student outcomes in online programs for continuous improvement, Middle States accreditation, and ABET accreditation efforts.
  • Administer a budget that includes all funding for CTLD programs, faculty course development salaries, and staff training.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Engineering for Professionals leadership team to deliver a first-class online experience, boosting student retention and satisfaction.
  • Serve as an advisor to WSE and JHU community on teaching and learning topics and initiatives.
  • Seek opportunities for external and internal funding for teaching and learning projects and programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Professional Educational Programming (30%)

  • Design a strategy and an implementation plan to create effective professional development programs that maximize resources (human and technological) and enhance the work of faculty in the education of WSE students.
  • Lead all training efforts for faculty members developing and teaching online courses, including New Faculty Orientation and the Faculty Forward Fellowship Academy.
  • Provide programming that meets faculty needs (teacher- and instruction-centered) and focuses on assisting faculty in deepening student learning.
  • Facilitate the formation and support of WSE faculty instructional learning communities and communities of practice.

Performance Management (20%)

  • Hire, train, and lead 19 professional staff members, many of whom work remotely.
  • Manage CTLD staff development to ensure consistent skill-building and professional growth.
  • Develop measurable goals for the department and evaluate staff members against those goals.


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • An understanding of and respect for the unique demands and characteristics of part-time students and faculty members.
  • Demonstrated ease and familiarity with all appropriate technologies used in the online learning environment
  • Knowledge of QualityMatters, Canvas, Kaltura, Camtasia Studio, and Asana.
  • Knowledge of technologies, such as Generative AI, that can help improve processes and reduce the human workload for task-related actions.
  • Excellence in written and verbal communication, with proven ability to communicate effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Knowledge of cognitive science literature as it applies to teaching and learning, curriculum development, course design, teaching methodologies, and assessment of student learning.
  • Appreciation for multiple instructional delivery methods, including face-to-face, blended, and online.
  • Ability to manage external partner arrangements and contracts, including ongoing evaluation of quality and performance.
  • Ability to work effectively as an individual contributor and as a member of collaborative teams, with a high degree of professionalism and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusiveness; demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Education, Engineering, or Science field.
  • Five years of experience managing staff in higher education (and/or corporate) instructional design-based projects and programs.
  • Additional years of experience may substitute for education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Seven years of experience managing staff in higher education (and/or corporate) instructional design-based projects and programs.
  • Administrative experience that includes budgeting, personnel management, and interactions with all levels of faculty and staff found in a university environment.
  • Experience developing and implementing training and development programs.
  • Leadership and management experience in prior position(s).
  • Experience working with organizations and individuals in international settings; cross-cultural competence and experience in a multi-cultural environment.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency

If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
