Assistant Dean of Enrollment and Academic Services

General summary/purpose:


Reporting to the  Associate Dean for Engineering Educational Program Services in the Whiting School of Engineering (WSE), the Assistant Dean of Enrollment and Academic Services is housed in the WSE Office of Educational Program Services, and is charged with leading and supporting the ongoing development and improvement of a range of student operational services (including: admissions, registration, financial aid, fellowships, and degree clearance) across the four Graduate Education and Lifelong Learning verticals in the Whiting School of Engineering: (1) the fulltime (residential) master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral fellow programs (Homewood campus); (2) the professional master’s and graduate certificate programs (Engineering for Professionals program), (3) the non-credit programs for professionals (Lifelong Learning), and admissions processing support for (4) pre-collegiate (K-12) online and on-site programs.


This is a hybrid position.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with the educational programs of the Whiting School of Engineering to develop data-driven enrollment, academic operations, and financial aid strategies to support program creation, enrollment, retention and student satisfaction goals.
  • Manage, coordinate, and support the efforts of the separate WSE admissions and academic operations and services offices with a focus on identifying and championing efficiencies, policy and practice alignments, resource allocation, and goal setting and achievement.
  • Lead WSE efforts and partner with Academic Affairs, SEAM (University wide Office of Student Enrollment and Account Management), SSEI (Student Services Excellence Initiative) and other university partners to maximize available technologies and platforms to provide the best student user experience in terms of registration, billing, financial aid, fellowship funding, conferral processing, and degree audit and performance tracking/flagging systems.
  • Work to resolve escalated and complex student/learner/postdoctoral fellow registration, billing, and other student services issues; track trends and propose policy/system changes in response as needed.
  • Create and regularly update admission and enrollment dashboards to monitor admissions and enrollment activity.
  • Provide recommendations to improve enrollment performance and support enrollment goals for admissions, and registration goals.
  • Develop strategies for financial aid packaging that will support enrollment goals.
  • Partner with the divisional office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to develop strategies, policies and practices designed to enhance outreach to under-represented prospective graduate students and ensure more inclusive and equitable admissions and financial aid evaluations.
  • Develop communication outreach strategies and schedules to current students on issues about academic deadlines, processes, services
  • Strategize and implement technologies to increase outreach and enhance academic and admissions services with prospective and current students.
  • Focus on UX concepts to develop process and technology strategies that support students and learners of all needs and origin: including international students/learners, those with invisible and visible disabilities, and intersectional identities.
  • Work closely with team members in the Office of Graduate Education and Lifelong Learning to support the School’s strategic enrollment priorities.
  • Collaborate with the Johns Hopkins University Office of the Vice Provost for Admissions and Financial Aid to develop and review enrollment strategies.
  • Collaborate with the Johns Hopkins University Homewood Registrar’s Office, University Registrar’s Office, and SEAM(Office of Student Enrollment and Account Management) enterprise to support each Whiting School educational program’s admissions, registration, and student services priorities. 


Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Master's degree or above required. Five years of progressively responsible enrollment management experience in an academic environment.
  • Must have previous experience working with admissions and financial aid for graduate students
  • Must have worked in academic settings with diverse student populations in terms of race, ethnicity, country of origin, etc.
  • Previous experience managing and supervising extensive staff

  • Demonstrated leadership in designing and implementing strategic initiatives around enrollment, registration, admissions, and academic operations.
  • Understanding of diverse student behavior and trends within financial aid and admissions.
  • Knowledge of higher education laws and regulations impacting student admissions and financial aid
  • Expertise in translating a vision and strategy into a practical plan with concrete steps of implementation with measurable enrollment outcomes.
  • Understanding of the national trends and issues related to graduate student recruitment in higher education.
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience with working with students with a multitude of intersectional identities, comprehensive knowledge of opportunities and challenges impacting international students
  • Strategic and analytical in approach to student admissions and financial aid.
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, analyze data, and think systematically from both a detailed and a strategic perspective. Proven ability to summarize data for reflection and action by stakeholders
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to present to large audiences and write creative cogent communication for prospective students
  • Strong MS Office Suite skills and high degree of comfort working with large databases and spreadsheets
  • Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential records and information
  • Highly skilled in building and leading diverse teams
  • Knowledge of budget development and administration
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and organizational and problem-solving skills
