Under the leadership of the Executive Director of Career Services, the career center is central in shifting the institution towards a model of career preparedness in which all Johns Hopkins students integrate their career preparation into their academic experience with the same pursuit of excellence – distinguishing themselves as the “talent of choice”.


The mission of the career center at Johns Hopkins University is to:


  • Provide all students and alumni the experiences, knowledge, skills and tools to make smart career decisions and to package and prepare themselves for their pursuits.
  • Close the gap between what employers seek in graduates and what students/alumni come equipped with.
  • Orchestrate university-wide connections to build the “best possible” career ready network. Build enduring career readiness capabilities – those that last beyond first destinations.
  • Be a catalyst for alumni engagement – lifetime affiliation.


General Description:


The JHU Career Center serves all students and alumni 0-5 years out of programs in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering. The Industry Portfolio Lead reports directly to the Employer and Market Development Director and works with a team of 5 colleagues to develop relationships with internal and external constituents for the purpose of connecting students and recent graduates with job and internship opportunities. This position creates business development strategies and implements plans for assigned industries and/or locations. These positions also lead talent branding, packaging, marketing delivery for the employer/market development team focused on specific industries and locations.


Specific Duties:


Employer Relationship Development/Management:


  • In collaboration with career center leadership team, plans and develops business development activities for assigned industries and locations.
  • Manages a portfolio of relationships reflecting assigned industries, locations and campus partners.
  • Develops and maintains relationships directly with alumni, company representatives, and parents who are recruiting students for internships and full time positions.
  • Identifies key alumni partners to inform business development activities and attempts to connect them to appropriate alumni engagement opportunities across the career center.


Internal Liaison/Facilitator:


  • Collaborates with the talent/capability team to understand the talent supply chain and cultivates relevant opportunities based on that information—collectively working to maintain a balance between talent supply and employer demand.
  • Communicates opportunities cultivated from business development activities to the talent/capability team and tracks applicants.
  • Connects organizations in their portfolio to campus organizations and departments to begin building an “institutional relationship” with the end goal of increasing recruiting activity.
  • Builds relationships with alumni relations and development colleagues to set up a referral pipeline for alumni interested in engaging with the career center.
  • Utilizes social media and marketing/branding strategy to communicate job and internship opportunities to students and recent graduates.




  • Conducts research and competitor and market analysis across industries and regions. Prepares recruiting projections/reports for assigned companies and alumni.
  • Prepares recruiting projections/reports for assigned companies and alumni.
  • Becomes a recognized industry and job market expert for assigned industries and locations.
  • Drives the talent branding/marketing strategy for the employer/market development team and creates relevant talent branding/marketing e-materials for employer presentations.
  • Creates communications materials for all employer and market development staff to utilize in daily operations (stock emails, reports, presentations, job market outlooks, industry projections).


Data Reporting/Tracking


  • Creates industry and job market projections for students
  • Utilizes CRM to track external engagement with recruiters and alumni recruiting partners.
  • Tracks recruiting activity analytics (number of views, number of applicants, marketing effectiveness, program attendance, resulting hires) for assigned recruiting partners.




  • Builds a virtual recruiting platform for recruiting partners to better connect with JHU talent.
  • Oversees university LinkedIn Groups.
  • Represents the Career Center and Johns Hopkins University in speaking to visiting employers, alumni, and parents during recruiting visits, company information sessions, alumni leadership weekends, admissions programs, orientation functions, and parent programs.






Bachelor's degree required, Master’s degree in a related field preferred.




Industry Experience: Three years relevant experience required. Five years preferred in a relevant industry, business development experience a plus. Three years of experience in Development, Alumni Relations, Admissions, Talent Management, Recruiting or Organizational Development may be considered.


Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • A track record of success in partnering and developing successful long term client relationships. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment that requires quick turnaround and quality output.
  • Comfortable with various technologies connected to relationship management and recruiting. Experience using a CRM to track relationships strongly preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to run reports and analyze data in Excel.
  • High level of proficiency of marketing/brand management and social media strategies.
  • High emotional intelligence—ability to build relationships with a wide variety of constituents. Entrepreneurial spirit, innovative and willingness to try new things.
  • Exhibits a high level of professionalism.
  • Ability to complete tasks on time and with minimal supervision.
  • Self-motivated, ability to set goals and execute business development activities with confidence. Flexibility to perform in an ever-changing and rapidly growing work environment.

  • The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
