Assistant Director, Leadership Annual Giving

General Description


The Assistant Director of Leadership Annual Giving is responsible for securing philanthropic annual fund support from donors, focusing mainly on closing gifts between $500 - $5,000.  This position serves as the School’s lead fundraiser for qualifying prospects and driving the School’s leadership annual giving donor count.  The focus of this role is on current and new annual donors with the goal of growing their annual gifts.  As such, it sits functionally between the school’s annual giving/direct mail program and the school’s major gift program.  This role is responsible for the identification and cultivation of donors who could eventually grow into major gift donors, as well as the “flagging” of donors who might be ready for a major gift conversation with one of the major gift officers on the Carey development team.  This position reports to the Director of Development.    



The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:


  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors who have the capacity to make financial commitments of $500 to $5,000.  Manage a portfolio of approximately 100 prospects.


  • Conduct at least 120 in-person meetings with alumni and constituents with the aim of identifying, qualifying, and cultivating new philanthropic and volunteer leaders for the school. 


  • Develop and execute, in coordination with the Senior Associate Director, the school’s new Leadership Giving Society.


  • Identify and recruit new members for volunteer leadership opportunities including the Dean’s Advisory Council and the Dean’s Alumni Advisory Board.


  • Suggest and lead execution of team strategies to appropriately engage key geographic, professional, and interest-centered constituencies within the Carey Business School alumni population in alignment with the school’s fundraising priorities.


  • Ensure successful execution of alumni events in support of the schools major and annual giving programs as well as student-to-alumni transitions.


  • Serve as liaison with specific departments/within Carey Business School and meet with unit leaders at least twice per year.


  • Serve as an effective ambassador for the Carey Business School and the University by developing a conversational knowledge of the research, teaching, and program-related funding priorities.


  • Assist with Development and Alumni Relations Office, Carey Business School, and Johns Hopkins University functions and tasks as needed.





Bachelor’s degree required. Two years related experience required.  Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
